Butler Track Star Andrew Sherman Named Academic All-America

Butler track and cross country standout Andrew Sherman has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). He was one of 15 student-athletes named first team on the Men's University Division Cross Country/Track & Field honor squad.

Sherman, a graduate student majoring in education, was one of the top middle distance runners in the Horizon League this spring. He was named the 2005 Horizon League Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, after he won the 800 meter run and placed second in the 1500 meter run at the 2005 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championship. He broke Butler's 800 meter record during the 2005 outdoor season twice!

The talented Butler runner also was named MVP of the Bulldogs' cross country team, which placed fourth at the 2004 NCAA Division I Championship. He won the individual title at the 2004 Horizon League Cross Country Championship.

Sherman is a two-time Horizon League Academic All-League performer. He's the third member of Butler's track and field squad to be named Academic All-America this year, joining women runners Victoria Mitchell and Monica Behney. Mitchell earned second team Academic All-America recognition, while Behney was picked to the third team.

To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve in at least their second season of athletic and academic eligibility at their current school and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 on a 4.00 scale. The 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's University Division Track & Field/Cross Country Team included 46 student-athletes representing 37 different NCAA Division I institutions.
