Butler's Victoria Mitchell Wins Silver at World Univeristy Games

Indianapolis, Ind. - Butler University track and field standout Victoria Mitchell added to an already impressive resume with a silver medal performance in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase atthe World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, on Wednesday, August 17. Mitchell, representing Australia, placed runner-up in the race in a Butler school-record time of 9:47.54.

Mitchell's effort was the second-fastest time ever for a female athlete from Australia and the eighth-fastest collegiate time ever. She broke her own school mark of 9:53.24, while becoming the fi rstand only athlete from Australia to win a medal at this year's games. Sixth-ranked Livia Toth of Hungary was the gold medalist in the steeplechase with a time of 9:40.37.

Earlier this year, Mitchell became the fi rst Butler athlete in 73 years to win a national championship with a fi rst place fi nish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. She'll return to Butler this fall to compete in her final season of cross country eligibility.
