INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State University senior Bjorn Schantz (men's swimming) and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay senior Amanda Popp (women's basketball) have been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Dec. 5).

Schantz earned the award for the fifth time this season for his performance at the Miami (Ohio) University Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 2), where he clocked League-best efforts in the 500-yard freestyle (4:30.42) and 1,650-yard freestyle (15:53.98). He also finished the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.35 and holds the League's top times of the season in all three events.

In the classroom, Schantz boasts a 3.90 grade-point average as an international business/marketing major, earning CSU's Athletic Academic Award in 2005. The Viking senior was the League's men's swimming Athlete of the Year in 2005-06 as well as the Swimmer of the Meet after helping CSU to the 2006 League Championship---the school's first title in any sport since 1999. He also was a member of the Academic All-League Team in 2006.

Popp scored a season-high 19 points---one off her career-high---in a 71-70 loss to 17th-ranked DePaul University last Wednesday (Nov. 29). Popp hit six of seven shots from the floor and grabbed three rebounds in 35 minutes against the Blue Demons, raising her season scoring average to 9.5 points per game.

Popp has been a member of three consecutive WBCA Academic Top 25 teams during her time in Green Bay.
