Indianapolis, Ind. - Horizon League Senior Associate Commissioner Alfreeda Goff has been chosen by the Black Coaches Association (BCA) as the 2005 Athletic Administrator of the Year. Goff was honored at the awards banquet on June 3 following the BCA's 18th Annual National Convention and Expo. Award winners were nominated and voted on by members of the BCA.
"Our honorees are not just successful professionals, but outstanding people," said BCA Executive Director Floyd Keith. "Our membership has chosen well."
Goff, one of the most highly respected administrators in intercollegiate athletics, is completing her seventh year with the Horizon League after spending four years as the Director of Athletics at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va. At the League office, she serves as its Director of Championships, Senior Woman Administrator, League governance liaison, and Chief of Staff.
"To be honored by my peers is an accomplishment and I feel privileged," said Goff. "Any success that I have had is due to opportunities to work with great people. This is for all of our accomplishments on all of our journeys."
With nearly 30 years of intercollegiate athletics experience, Goff has worked as both a coach and administrator. She served as an assistant track and field coach at the University of Pittsburgh in 1975 before being promoted to head coach, a capacity in which she served from 1976-82. From 1982-1987, Goff was the administrative assistant for women's athletics and departmental scheduling at Pitt. From 1989-90 she was the co-head women's basketball coach at Virginia Commonwealth, where she served as an Associate Athletic Director from 1987-94. She began her career as a health and physical education teacher with the Pittsburgh Public School District.
Goff is currently serving as the president of the National Association of Collegiate Women's Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) and was the co-tournament manager for the 2005 NCAA Women's Final Four, which took place in the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. She has represented the Horizon League on the NCAA Division I Management Council and has also served on a number of other national committees, including the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee, National Associate of Collegiate Women Athletic Administration's Executive Committee, NCAA Division I Track and Field Committee, NCAA Basketball Issues Committee, and other local and regional committees.
Other award winners include University of Washington Men's Basketball Coach Lorenzo Romar, who received the Fritz Pollard Award as the BCA Male Coach of the Year.
