Senior midfielder Sarah Oligney of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay was named the Horizon League's 2005 women's soccer Player of the Year to highlight the League's all-conference team and individual award winners, which were announced Wednesday (Nov. 2) at the annual pre-tournament banquet in Green Bay.

The Horizon League's other two individual honors were awarded to University of Detroit Mercy head coach Mike Lupenec as Coach of the Year and freshman defender Jess Rooma of Wright State University as Newcomer of the Year. Voting was conducted by the League's eight head coaches.

Oligney, who was the Co-Player of the Year in 2003, led the League in conference games only in all three offensive categories: points (15), goals (5, tied) and assists (5). A native of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., she helped the Phoenix to a third-place finish in the regular season and an overall record of 9-8-1 entering this week's League tournament. Oligney is a three-time first-team honoree after being a second-team selection as a freshman.

In his 12th season at Detroit, Lupenec directed the Titans to a second-place finish (5-1-1) and an overall mark of 8-4-4 in the regular season. Detroit has lost only once in its past nine matches, posting a record of 8-1-3 in that span. It is the second Horizon League Coach-of-the-Year honor for Lupenec, who shared the award with Mike Moynihan of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2000.

Rooma was a stalwart of the Wright State defense that ranked second in the League with a 0.65 goals-against average in conference games. A native of Westfield Center, Ohio, she started 17 of 18 games this fall and collected one assist. Rooma is the second Raider to be named League Newcomer of the Year, joining Mary Beth Young in 2001.

Regular-season champion UW-Milwaukee boasted a League-high three players on the first team in sophomore Ginny Graczyk and freshmen Sarah Teegarden and Erin Kane, the All-League goalkeeper. Four teams had two players each on the first team: UW-Green Bay (Oligney and Stephanie Gross), Wright State (Rooma and Jodie Shoaf), Butler University (Meredith Buemi and Ashley Twehues) and Detroit (Mary Parker and Allison Epple). Parker was the 2004 Horizon League Player of the Year.

Named to the second team were Kate Lord and Angie Muir of Butler, Allie Bullard and Lauren Moss of Detroit, Jamie Wasielewski of Loyola University Chicago, Dixie Schubert of UW-Green Bay, Janice McGann and Amanda Winn of UW-Milwaukee, goalkeeper Steph Comisar of Wright State, Heather Clapacs of Cleveland State University and Sadie Brookman of Youngstown State University.

Rooma, Teegarden, Kane, Muir and Moss also were selected to the All-Newcomer Team along with Jenny Southard of Butler, Shelley Marick and Blair Gilleland of Detroit, Sharon Zurbey of UW-Green Bay, Kitty Montgomery of UW-Milwaukee and Caitlin Lee of Youngstown State.

The 2005 Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship will be held Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 3-6, at Aldo Santaga Stadium on the campus of UW-Green Bay. The winner of Sunday's championship match will earn the League's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship which will begin Nov. 11 at campus sites.
