The 2007 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy, got underway with a full schedule of competition on Saturday.

 

The UW-Milwaukee women are currently leading the field with 68 points, followed by Youngstown State with 60.  Loyola is slightly ahead of Butler 18-16, with Wright State close behind with 14, followed by Detroit with 8 and UIC with 2 points.

 

On the men's side, the Panthers have also started out strong overall, managing 43 points on the first day of competition.  Butler currently stands at 33, while Youngstown State is still in the hunt with 31.  UIC stands in fourth with 23 points, followed by Detroit with 14 and Loyola with 8 points.

 

UW-Milwaukee's Jenni Saarinen was able to break her own Horizon League Championship record in the pentathlon by accumulating 3,700 points for the victory.  Saarinen claimed first-place finishes in the 800 meters, high jump, long jump and shot put to make her way to the top of the podium.  Erin Havener also claimed an individual win for the Panthers by posting a height of 3.60 meters (11-09.75") in the pole vault.

 

Bethany Anderson led Youngstown State by defending her title in the weight throw by posting a toss of 17.09 meters (56'01.00").  Alisha Anthony also picked up a field event victory in the long jump with a leap of 5.83 meters (19'01.50"). 

 

The UW-Milwaukee men have also taken the lead in team competition.  Adam Schleis was able to defend his individual title in the long jump by posting a mark of 6.96 meters (22'10"). 

 

Butler grabbed two wins on the day, with Alex Hains claiming the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:40.38.  The Butler contingent of Andrew Barbeau, Shon Davidson, Scott Overall and Chris Smith also emerged victorious in the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 10:07.93.
