INDIANAPOLIS -- Loyola University Chicago junior Tom Levin (men's basketball) and Rambler senior Jenna Real (women's basketball) have been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Dec. 12).

Levin turned in his best effort of the season in Loyola's 76-42 victory over Loyola University New Orleans last Saturday (Dec. 9), posting yearly-high totals of eight points, five rebounds and two steals. The junior forward hit all three of his shots from the field including a pair of three-pointers. He has been a key contributor off the bench throughout the season, helping the Ramblers to a 7-3 record.

In the classroom, Levin carries a 3.58 grade-point average as an economics major. He was a member of the Academic All-League team last winter and also earned a spot on the circuit's Academic Honor Roll in each semester during the 2005-06 season.

Real registered 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals on Wednesday (Dec. 6), leading Loyola to its first victory of the season with a 73-69 triumph at the University of Dayton. She converted eight of ten attempts from the floor against the Flyers to snap LU's season-opening seven-game losing streak. She leads the League in field-goal percentage (.603) while ranking eighth in rebounding (5.6 per game) and ninth in scoring (11.6 points per contest).

In the classroom, Real owns a 3.54 grade-point average in her studies as a fine arts major. She is a four-time member of the League's Academic Honor Roll.

The Ramblers' sweep marks the third time this year that one school has claimed both weekly awards. Kent Wories and Genni Gardner accomplished the feat for Butler University on Sept. 5, while the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tandem of Robby Leibold and Sarah Moore took the honors on Nov. 21.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
