Horizon League Players of the Week

Frank Peabody
Senior * Goalkeeper * Louisville, Ky.
Peabody posted back-to-back shutouts to lead Butler to road victories over Ohio State and Cleveland State. He had six saves against the Buckeyes, who were ranked #22 in the nation by Soccer America at the time. He added four stops more versus Cleveland State for his sixth shutout of the season, lowering his GAA to 0.25.

Christian King
Freshman * Forward * Harper Woods, Mich.
King set up all three goals scored by the Titans this week in key road victories at UW-Green Bay and at UW-Milwaukee. His assist on the match-winner versus UW-Milwaukee came with 6:28 remaining in regulation and gave Detroit its first victory over the Panthers since 1997. UDM now leads the League with nine points.

Other Top Performances for the Week Ending October 2

Pavle Dundjer, UIC
Sophomore * Midfielder * Becmen, Belgrade
Dundjer collected eight points with three goals and two assists in the Flames' 8-1 victory over Centenary on Sunday. Dundjer's first career hat trick raised his season point total to a League-high 14, and the eight points tied for the second-most in Flames history.

Keum Sung Kim, Loyola
Sophomore * Midfielder * Arlington Heights, Ill.
Kim scored four goals with one assist in three matches last week, helping the Ramblers to a pair of victories. Kim had two markers in each triumph as he figured in all three LU tallies in a 3-2 win over DePaul, netting the eventual match-winner in that contest and also in overtime to defeat Bowling Green.

Neil Dombrowski, UW-Milwaukee
Senior * Midfielder * West Allis, Wis.
Dombrowski had the game-winning goal in the Panthers' 1-0 victory at Cleveland State on Thursday, his third marker of the season. That ties him for the team lead in that category. He also had a team- and season-high seven shots (four on goal) versus Detroit on Sunday.

Jason Balach, Wright State
Senior * Goalkeeper * Noblesville, Ind.
Balach continued his strong play with a shutout versus Xavier on Friday, stopping eight shots in that 1-0 victory. He added a four-save effort against crosstown rival Dayton on Sunday, as his shutout streak ended at 372:54 in a 1-0 loss. Balach has three shutouts and a 1.11 goals-against average for the season.

News From Around the League

Huge week in Wisconsin moves Titans to top of League standings
Detroit swept both Wisconsin schools, defeating UW-Green Bay 1-0 on Friday and outlasting UW-Milwaukee 2-1 on Sunday. UDM has now won three matches in a row, all by a single goal, to improve to 5-3-2 overall and 3-1-0 in the League.

Sunday's victory over the Panthers avenged a 3-2 loss in the Horizon League championship match last fall and ended UW-Milwaukee's eight-match winning streak in the series between the schools. Detroit had not beaten the Panthers since Sept. 21, 1997.

Sophomore netminder Sasha Boskovic allowed only one goal in 180 minutes, lowering his season GAA to 0.97. The shutout at Green Bay was his fourth of the year.

Bulldogs keep streaks alive with pair of shutouts in Ohio
Butler climbed to 8-2-0 on the season after winning its League opener Sunday. A 4-0 victory at Cleveland State also marked BU's third consecutive victory, all via shutout. Butler began the season with a five-match winning run. Senior goalkeeper Frank Peabody recorded his fifth and sixth shutouts of the year, tying him for sixth place on BU's all-time single-season list. Alan Placek had six whitewashes in 1996.

Freshman Eduardo Garcia nailed his third goal of the season to give Butlera 1-0 victory at (then-#22) Ohio State earlier in the week. He shares the team scoring lead with senior Roberto Gallo, who notched his third goal of the year at Cleveland State. Senior Jason Keiffer added the eventual match-winner at CSU for his first goal in a Butler uniform.

The Bulldogs are slated to play the first collegiate soccer match in the newly-renovated Butler Bowl this week. The facility has received a complete makeover, including a new FieldTurf surface which was completed last week.

Raiders split pair of contests with local rivals
Wright State begins the week at 5-5-0 after a 1-0 loss to crosstown rival Dayton on Sunday. Jason Balach had his shutout streak snapped at 372:54 with the Flyers' first-half goal which also ended WSU's four-match winning streak. The Raiders had shut out each of their previous three foes as eight of the team's ten matches this season have been decided by shutout.

Paul-Anthony Perez assisted on two goals in Wright State's 3-0 victory over Xavier on Friday. Perez recorded his first two assists of 2005 on goals by Dana York and Tony Labudovski, who share the team lead with three goals apiece.

After being outscored 8-2 in the first five games of 2005 (en route to a 1-4-0 record), Wright State has reversed that trend with an 8-2 flurry of its own in the last five contests (4-1-0 in that span).

Kim's big week gives Ramblers two victories
A week ago, Loyola sophomore Keum Sung Kim was searching for his first collegiate goal. The midfielder made up for lost time with four markers and an assist in three matches during the week, lifting the Ramblers to two wins and a 4-4-1 overall ledger. Kim hit the net twice including the eventual match-winner versus DePaul on Wednesday, then came back with two more strikes on Sunday versus Bowling Green. His overtime goal in that contest gave LU a 3-2 triumph. He now leads the team and rates third in the League with 12 points (four goals, four assists).

Freshman goalkeeper Brad Sommer registered seven saves versus BGSU, giving him 33 in six contests since taking over the starting role. Sommer owns a 2.04 goals-against average.

Loyola has scored at least two goals in eight of nine matches this season, and is one of only two League teams (UW-Milwaukee is the other) to not be shut out so far in 2005.

Panthers come up short in League Championship rematch
UW-Milwaukee slipped to 4-2-3 on the season with Sunday's 2-1 loss to Detroit. The setback also dropped the Panthers to 1-1-0 in the League and marked the team's first home-field loss in League play since Oct. 8, 2000.

Detroit's first-half goal Sunday was the first non-penalty-kick marker allowed by the Panthers in 319:03. Junior Eric Mickschl had posted his eighth career shutout earlier in the week with a 1-0 win at Cleveland State.

The Panthers have now scored at least one goal in 21 consecutive matches, dating back to last year. UW-Milwaukee was last shut out on Oct. 10, 2004, with a 1-0 loss at UIC.

Phoenix hit the road for extended stay
After playing five of its first eight matches at home, UW-Green Bay has its next five on the road. The Phoenix do not return to Santaga Stadium until Oct. 22 versus UIC.

UW-Green Bay lost its only match of the week, falling at home to Detroit, 1-0 on Friday to slip to 5-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in League play.

Junior forward Joshua Okoampa was held scoreless for the third consecutive match but remains among the League leaders with 11 points (five goals, one assist). Freshman forward Tosaint Ricketts has added four goals while sophomore midfielder Glenn Herzog has two along with a team-high three assists.

Flames take out frustration on Centenary
UIC exploded for eight goals in an 8-1 victory over Centenary on Sunday, snapping a three-match losing streak (which also included a 2-0 loss to Northwestern earlier in the week) in climbing to 4-3-1 on the season.

Sophomore midfielder Pavle Dundjer paced the rout, recording his first career hat trick and adding two assists for eight points. He is now tied for the League lead with 14 points (four goals, six helpers) this season, matching Detroit's Andrew Ornoch. Brodey Simkins added two goals while Cesar Zambrano and Tonci Skroce each had a pair of assists as the Flames out-shot the Gents, 23-2.

The eight goals equaled UIC's season total through seven matches prior to the match, and also matched the most scored by a Flames squad since Sept. 30, 1991 when UIC routed Trinity Christian, 10-0.

Vikings believe eight (consecutive losses) is enough
Cleveland State fell to 0-8-1 overall and 0-3-0 in League play with losses to UW-Milwaukee (1-0 Friday) and Butler (4-0 Sunday). CSU has now lost eight in a row, the longest such streak since a nine-match skid in 2001. The Vikings tied Canisius, 1-1, in their season-opener but have not registered a victory since defeating Buffalo, 1-0, on Oct. 15, 2004.

Freshman goalkeeper Anthony DeMarco posted a career-high 13 saves to keep the Vikings competitive against defending League champion UW-Milwaukee, his third double-digit effort of the year, all coming since Sept. 22. He was third in the nation last week, averaging more than seven saves per match.

Cleveland State has had difficulty scoring, with seven goals in nine matches including only one in its last five contests. CSU has not scored a goal in the last 329:35. Sophomore midfielder Steve Trapp is the only Viking with more than one goal (two, plus two helpers) this season.

Scoring Trends Through the First Month of 2005

As the calendar turns to October, teams have reached the unofficial midway point of the season, giving coaches and players a chance to review certain trends which have emerged during the first five weeks of the 2005 campaign:

Butler:
The Bulldogs have not allowed a first-half goal this season, outscoring their opponents 5-0 before intermission and 9-4 after the break. The team scoring first has won all ten of BU's matches this year.

Cleveland State:
The Vikings have not scored a first-half goal since Sept. 11 versus Marshall. CSU has been outscored 23-2 in the second half of games this season, including 21-1 in the final 30 minutes.

Detroit:
The Titans have allowed only three second-half goals this season. Detroit is a perfect 4-0-0 when scoring two or more goals, and has won all three times when leading at halftime.

UIC:
The Flames have spread their scoring around, with eight goals in the first half, eight in the second and one in overtime. UIC has yielded only three first-half goals so far in 2005.

Loyola:
The Ramblers might be the ultimate .500 team:1-1-1 when scoring first, 3-3-0 when opponents draw first blood, 1-1-1 when up at the half, 1-1-0 when down after 45 minutes and 2-2-0 when tied.

UW-Green Bay:
The Phoenix strike quickly, outscoring opponents 4-0 in the first 15 minutes of the match. UWGB also owns a 4-0 edge after the 75-minute mark but has been outscored 9-7 in the middle 60 minutes.

UW-Milwaukee:
Both of the Panthers' losses have come on late goals: an overtime marker by Fairleigh Dickinson and Detroit's tally with just over six minutes left in regulation.

Wright State:
The Raiders' 5-5-0 record isn't the only evenly-matched item on WSU's ledger. Wright State's goal tally (for and against) is 4-4 in the first half, 6-6 in the second half.
