Plum Creek Golf Club To Host 2006 Horizon League Golf Championships

The 2006 Horizon League Golf Championships will be contested at Plum Creek Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana, the Horizon League office announced Monday (Aug. 1).


Seven men's teams and five women's teams will compete for their respective League titles on May 1 and 2 with the men's champion earning the League's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Championships. Five-player teams from each institution will play 36 holes on Monday, followed by the final 18 on Tuesday morning.


Opened in 1997, Plum Creek's 18-hole, par-72 championship course was designed by Pete Dye and was the site of the 2003 Indiana State Open. Its most notable features are its subtle-breaking greens and strong par threes, according to John Pielemeier, Plum Creek's Director of Golf.


"The course is playable for all skill levels, and now it will be able to test the skills of some top-flight players during the Horizon League Championships," said Pielemeier. "There are a lot of scoring opportunities and risk-reward shots, and we can tailor the course to make it a nice yardage for both the men and the women."


The 2006 event will mark the Horizon League golf championships' first appearance in Indiana since the 1998 men's tournament was held at Bear Slide Golf Club in Cicero. For the past two years, the championships have been held at Royal American Golf Course in Galena, Ohio.


"For a relatively new golf course, Plum Creek already has a history of hosting major state events and it should be a great site for our 2006 Horizon League Championships," said Mark Engel, Director of Golf and men's head coach at the University of Detroit Mercy who toured the course last month. "Both our men's and women's teams should find it to be a great test of golf."


Last spring Detroit won its third Horizon League men's golf championship in five years by six strokes over Wright State University, while Butler University captured the women's title for the first time in the event's three-year history.
