Horizon League Men's Swimmer of the Week

 

Damian Kurtyka

UW-Green Bay, Freshman,Toronto, Ontario

Kurtyka earned the Phoenix's lone win in a swimming event against the Badgers with a victory in the 200 frestyle (1:45.18) in his first collegiate meet.  He also placed second in the 500 freestyle (4:53.78) and 200 freestyle relay (1:27.58).

 

Horizon League Women's Swimmer of the Week

 

Julie Olson

UW-Milwaukee, Senior, Hastings, Minn.

Olson led the Panthers to two of their highest showings at the Dennis Stark Relays as a member of both the third-place 400-yard backstroke relay and the 400 freestyle relay that finished in fourth-place at 4:05.86, less than four seconds behind the winning time by Notre Dame.

 

Horizon League Men's Diver of the Week

 

Phillip Zumstein

UW-Green Bay, Junior, Mundelein, Ill

Zumstein placed first on both the 1-meter board with a score of 268.95 and the 3-meter board with a score of 220.95 against Big Ten foe Wisconsin last weekend in the season opener for UW-Green Bay. 

 

Horizon League Women's Diver of the Week

 

Ashley Hall

UW-Green Bay, Sophomore, New Berlin, Wis.

Hall placed first on the 1-meter board with a score of 247.65 in the season opener for UW-Green Bay on Friday, Oct. 7 at Wisconsin. She also finished second to teammate Kari Helland on the 3-meter board with a score of 215.85.

Chase Gravengood

UW-Milwaukee, So., Oconomowoc, Wis.

Gravengood helped lead the Panthers to  three third-place finishes at the Dennis Stark Relays as part of the 400 individual medley relay team that finished in 3:44.73 and the 400 yd butterfly relay team that placed third at 3:34.74. 

 

Swimming & Diving season begins as three Horizon League teams take to the pool

 

Three Horizon League teams were in action last weekend to officially mark the start of the 2005-06 Swimming & Diving season.  UW-Milwaukee and Cleveland State started the season on Oct. 7 at the Dennis Stark Relays, hosted by Notre Dame, while UW-Green Bay squared off against instate rival Wisconsin. 

 

UW-Milwaukee travels to Madison, Wis. for the Madison Invitational on Thursday, Oct. 13, joining Youngstown State as the only Horizon League action this week. The Penguins kick off the season on Oct. 14 at the Tom Stubbs Relays in Bowling Green, Ohio.  Many other Horizon League teams, however, do not start competition for nearly two weeks.

 

UIC begins its season as the Flames travel to Eastern Illinois on Oct. 22, while Butler will face Evansville, Saint Louis and Valparaiso in the Bulldogs' season-opening meet on Oct. 23.

 

Wright State does not begin 2005-06 competition until Oct. 29.
