Horizon League Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

 

Nick Camilleri

Wright State, So, Melbourne, Aus.

Camilleri posted wins in both of his singles and doubles marches this past weekend, including straight-set singles triumphs over Jon Sutiadi of Chicago State (6-4, 6-3) and Nick Paganetti of Robert Morris (6-1, 6-0), plus two victories at No. 1 doubles with Tony Teufel. The sophomore has posted wins in five of his last six singles matches and eight of his last ten doubles contests.

 

Horizon League Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

 

Sarah Galon

Cleveland St., Sr., Waianae, Hawaii

Galon won both of her weekend matches in straight sets to complete a perfect month of February (6-0) and up her overall record to 17-6 at No. 1 singles.   Galon defeated YSU's Gina Peretti 6-0, 7-5 and Kali Delorie of Robert Morris 6-1, 6-0 and also went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles with freshman Denisa Muntean.

Molly Casperson

Butler, Fr., Neenah, Wis.

Casperson notched her fifth-straight win at No. 1 singles against Ball State on Feb. 23, scoring the Bulldogs' lone point in a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sophie Quist.  She also teamed up with Becky Jenkins for an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles.

 

Nicole Haralambopolous

Youngstown St., So., Sydenham, Aus.

Haralambopolous and senior Gina Peretti beat Cleveland State's Charlotte Gibbons and Kristin Chamberlain 9-7 at No. 2 doubles to help the Penguins seal the doubles point in a 4-3 loss to Cleveland State.  Haralambopolous also pushed her singles match against Gibbons to three sets, eventually falling 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (11). .

 

Grace Gill-Morlis

UIC, Jr., Lima, Peru

Gill-Morlis stepped up into the No. 2 singles slot due to an injury to usual No. 2 Callan Smith and did not miss a beat, picking up a straight-sets victory over UW-Milwaukee's Kari Kastenholz by a 6-0, 6-2 count.  The third-year standout also teamed with Jenna Reisch to win at No. 2 doubles by an 8-1 score. 

 

Svetlana Flankova

Detroit, Fr., Riga, Latvia

Flankova lost only one game as she won in straight sets over Megan Gray of Dayton, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles. That helped Detroit to a 5-2 victory over the Flyers in its only action last week.  Flankova also teamed with Annie Moore to post an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles.

 

Christa Ames

Wright State, Jr., Springfield, Ohio

Ames picked up three victories last week, including a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Robert Morris' Shelby Schmidt at No. 4 singles, and two doubles wins with Karina Presti.  Ames has posted wins in five of her last seven doubles matches, all with Presti as her partner.

 

Diego Cerzosimo

Youngstown St., So., Campanos, Brazil

Cerzosimo joined Brian Meek at No. 3 doubles, picking up wins against both Duquesne and Dayton.  Cerzosimo and Meek beat Duquesne's Michael Ortega and Ryan Weisband 8-4 on Saturday, the defeated Dayton's David Peyton and Rex Cabrera 8-6 on Sunday.  Cerzosimo also pulled out a win at singles, beating Michael Rohana 7-6 (8), 6-2 in Sunday's close 4-3 loss to Dayton.

 

Brad Groleski

Cleveland St., Jr., Springboro, Ohio

Groleski stepped into the No. 1 singles spot over the weekend and went 1-1, losing in three sets against Toledo, but picking up a 7-5, 6-4 win over Robert Morris on Sunday.  Groleski also went 1-1 in doubles play, with his win coming at No. 2 doubles with Dan Singer against RMU.

 

The Butler University men's team beings League play this week with a Saturday contest against UW-Green Bay.  The Bulldogs have won five consecutive League championships and have not lost to a League opponent since falling 4-2 to Wright State in the title match of the 2001 Horizon League Championships.   Butler is 55-1 in League play under head coach Jason Suscha.

 

Cleveland State University sophomore Rob West defeated Cyrus Manouchehrian of Robert Morris, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 singles in the Vikings 7-0 team victory.  With the win, West has now earned a singles victory at every position in the lineup in his year and a half at CSU.

 

The University of Detroit Mercy picked up its third straight win last weekend over Dayton, 5-2, improving the squad's overall dual match record to 4-5 on the season. The team will take a break from action until March 9 when the Titans open Horizon League action at UIC.

The University of Illinois at Chicago women suffered at the hands of Mother Nature again this week, as the their match against League foe UW-Green Bay was postponed.  Last week, the Flames match-up with Illinois State was cancelled.   In the only action for the women this week, junior Grace Gill-Morlis led the Flames to their 84th consecutive League victory, a 6-1 defeat of UW-Milwaukee. 

 

Both University of Wisconsin-Green Bay teams were idle last week.  The men have not played since a loss to Wisconsin on Feb. 18, while the women had two matches last week postponed due to weather.  The men return to action on March 2 against Wright State, while the women will begin play again on March 3 against Bradley.  

 

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee freshman Kelly Drvaric claimed UWM's lone win in its match with UIC last weekend.  She claimed a 6-1, 3-6, 10-6 victory over Lubica Nadasska, marking her fifth win of the spring and third at the No. 1 singles position.   Drvaric lost a chance to pick up her sixth win, however, as the Panthers schedule match with IPFW was cancelled due to inclement weather.  

 

Both the Wright State University men's and women's teams will begin League play this week against teams from Wisconsin, as the men face UW-Green Bay on March 2 and the women take on both the Phoenix (March 4) and UW-Milwaukee (March 2).

 

The Youngstown State University men's tennis team has swept the doubles point in each of its last three matches.  The duos of Tom Barth and Scott Kathary at No. 1, Ryan and Jason Trapp at No. 2 and Brian Meek and Diego Cerzosimo at No. 3 have picked up wins in tandem play against St. Francis (Pa.), Dayton and Duquesne.  

 

Valparaiso University's Jenny Schwartz picked up the team's second straight Mid-Continent Conference Athlete of the Week honor on Feb. 20 after posting five individual wins.  Teammate Kim Sajevic picked up the honor the previous week.
