Horizon League Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Youngstown St., So., Campanos, Brazil
Cerzosimo played at No. 2 singles for the first time on Monday night against Colby-Sawyer College with excellent results picking up the 6-1, 7-6 (1) victory. Cerzosimo also won his singles match from Sunday against Wesleyan 6-4, 6-3. Cerzosimo joined teammate Brian Meek to won both his doubles matches on the spring break trip as well.

Horizon League Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Grace Gill-Morlis
UIC, Junior, Lima, Peru
Gill-Morlis won all six of her matches this week, going 3-0 at No. 3 singles and 3-0 in doubles play to help the Flames extend their winning streak to four matches. She rebounded from a first-set loss in her first singles match of the week against Northern Illinois' Nao Umemura to win her next six frames of play and guide UIC to a win over NIU, a shutout of Detroit and a victory over Northern Iowa. She has not lost in a singles or doubles contest since February 11, a span of five consecutive wins on both the singles and doubles sides.

West was the only Viking to win in the spring break opener against Hawai'i Pacific on Sunday. West defeated Jan Hroch 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to run his singles record to 16-4.

Svetlana Flankova
Detroit, Fr., Riga, Latvia
Flankova teamed with Annie Moore to help Detroit win its only match against powerful UIC as the Titan pair scored an 8-4 win in Number 1 doubles. Flankova also picked up a straight-set win in No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-2) against UW-Green Bay's Aschley Jurgella.

Lindsay Sellers
Cleveland St., Jr., Mansfield, Ohio
Sellers was the only Viking to win in singles in CSU's first two contests in Hawaii, defeating Hawaii Manoa's Julia Sandborn 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (5) on Saturday.

Tanisha Welch
Youngstown St., Fr., Cleveland, Ohio
Welch proved her playing ability against Akron on Friday night, losing her first set 2-6 before battling back in the in the second and third sets to win the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. Welch's win also picked up the Penguins' second point in the 5-2 loss to Akron.

News & Notes from Around the League

The Butler University tennis teams saw little action last week, with the women's team sitting idle and the men competing only once, posting a 6-1 win over Dayton on March 6. Both teams will be in action this week as the Bulldogs travel west to Colorado. The men will take on Air Force on Wednesday, while the women face Metro State on Thursday and Air Force on Friday.

The Cleveland State University Vikings continue their spring break trip in Hawaii this week with contests against Hawaii'-Hilo and Hawaii'-BYU. So far on the trip, the women have dropped two matches, while the men are 0-1. Last season, the Vikings used a spring trip to Florida to bolster their team marks as the men picked up wins in three of four contests, while the women brought home all four match wins.

The University of Detroit Mercy began League play last week, suffering two losses against UIC, 7-0, and UW-Green Bay, 4-3. The Titan's dropped their first three League matches last year before sweeping a late weekend against the two Wisconsin schools and climbing into fifth place.

The University of Illinois at Chicago women garnered three match wins in three days last week, defeating Northern Illinois (5-2) Northern Iowa (4-3) and League foe Detroit (7-0). The Flames climbed into first place in the League standings at 2-0, while upping their season record to 4-5. UIC can even its record at .500 when the Flames take on North Texas on Friday.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women picked up their second straight Horizon League win with a 4-3 victory over Detroit last weekend. Both Phoenix teams now head into a spring break trip in Fort Myers, Fla.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee fell to Northern Iowa this weekend, ending a three-match winning streak. With the loss, the Panthers now hold a 2-1 record against Missouri Valley Conference Schools, having previously defeated Creighton (Feb. 10) and Bradley (Mar. 4). UWM will face one more Missouri Valley foe this season, meeting Illinois State on Mar. 25.

Both the Wright State University men's and women's teams were idle last week. The men will to action on Mar. 17 against Western Michigan and the women take on Bowling Green on Mar. 18.

The Youngstown State University men are enjoying a successful spring break trip in Orlando, having picked up two consecutive match victories for the first time since winning three in-a-row against Eastern Illinois, Cleveland State and Robert Morris from March 18-April 2, 2005. YSU freshmen Maurice Rucker and Chris Leson earned their first wins of the spring season during the Penguins' 7-0 defeat of Colby-Sawyer College, starting in the No. 5 and 6 singles spots, respectively.

The Valparaiso University men's tennis team gained its first victory of the spring last week, downing future League foe UW-Green Bay 6-1 in Fort Myers, Fla. The Crusaders swept the doubles point and claimed wins in five of the six singles spots, with only UW-Green Bay's Mark Goldin taking the win at the No. 2 position. On the women's side, the Crusaders fell to 4-6 on the season, losing two last week to Appalachian State and Long Island. Both teams continue their spring break stay in Florida this week.
