Cleveland State 10, Purdue 3

Eastlake, Ohio - Senior right-hander Matt Kaltenbach didn't need a whole lot of offensive support, but the Viking bats provided more than enough as Cleveland State (10-32) ran away with a 10-3 win over Purdue (21-27) at Classic Park on Tuesday (May 17) afternoon. A six-run second and a four-run seventh propelled the way as CSU ended a nine-game losing skid.

Kaltenbach (4-6) scatted eight hits while striking out eight and walking none in a 108-pitch, complete game showing. Meanwhile, the Vikings rapped out 15 hits, including 12 singles, off of three Boilermaker pitchers.

Purdue took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an unearned run after Mike Coles singled, scampered to third on a wild pick-off attempt and came home on a ground-out.

The Vikings came back with authority an inning later, loading the bases in the second with one out on singles by Jeff Katlen, Ryan Dukovich and Darren Greene. After Katlen came in on a wild pitch in the dirt, Steve Chinn ripped a single down the right field line to plate Dukovich and Greene. A single through the left side by Mike Ochwat put runners on first and third for Kolin Kelly, who roped a two-run double down the left field line before being thrown out trying to stretch for a triple.

Dominic Erney's eighth home run of the season, a solo shot to right, closed out the scoring to give the Vikings a 6-1 advantage.

Purdue cut into the lead in the fifth, touching Kaltenbach for two runs on a two-out home run to left field by Jeff Mojzik. The righty would handle the Boilermaker offense after the fifth, however, setting down 11 of the next 12 batters in a row.

CSU put the game out of reach in the seventh, plating four runs on four hits. The Vikings loaded the bases with no outs before Bobby Cash ripped a single up the middle to plate a pair. Ochwat drove in two more on a single two batters later to extend the advantage to 10-3.

All nine of the Viking starters picked up a hit in the game. Ochwat had one of his finest offensive performances of his career, going 5-for-5, all singles, with a run, two RBI and a stolen base. Katlen and Cash each tallied a pair of hits of their own, while Chinn, Kelly and Cash each drove in a pair.

Coles led the Boilermakers with three hits and a run scored. Andrew Groves (0-2) took the loss, allowing six runs in 1.2 innings.

UIC 3, Toledo 0

Chicago, Ill. - University of Illinois at Chicago pitchers Ryan Martin, Travis Kempf and Jason Foster combined for the four-hit shutout over Toledo as the host Flames picked up the 3-0 non-conference victory, over the Rockets at Les Miller Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Martin (2-1) allowed one hit in six innings of work, while striking out two batters to earn the victory. Foster tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his fifth save of the season. Toledo starter Levi Curry (1-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs and five hits in seven innings pitched.

With their fifth victory in a row, UIC improves to 34-18-1 overall, while the Rockets drop to 14-36 on the campaign.

UIC outfielders Shane Crowder and Larry Gempp Jr. each collected two hits on the afternoon to lead the Flames at the plate. Freshman first baseman Mark Hallberg went 0-for-3 on the afternoon, ending his team-best hitting streak at 23-games.

The Flames used a little, two-out magic in the fourth inning, as junior catcher Bryan Nolte drew a walk and moved to second on a single by Gempp.

Nolte scored on a RBI single by senior shortstop Mike Bruszer, narrowly beating the throw of Toledo right fielder Joel Visser, giving UIC the 1-0 lead over the Rockets. Bruszer advanced to second on the throw, beating Toledo catcher Nick Lance's relay. On the throw to second, Gempp rounded third and scored, giving the Flames the 2-0 advantage.

The Flames added an insurance run in the seventh inning, as Gempp roped a leadoff double and moved to third on a Bruszer sacrifice bunt. Senior third baseman Jeff Gremley plated Gempp with a safety squeeze bunt, extending UIC's lead to 3-0.

Butler 17, Valparaiso 12

Indianapolis--Freshman Alex Rinearson and sophomore Dustin Bucalo each had three hits and senior Robby Santoni added his first career grand slam to lead Butler to a 17-12 victory over visiting Valparaiso in a non-league game at Bulldog Park on Tuesday, May 17. The win in Butler's final home game of 2005 lifted the Bulldogs to 18-30 on the season, while Valparaiso slipped to 19-29.

The Bulldogs, who matched their second-highest run total this season, pulled away from a 6-6 tie with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bucalo, Rinearson, and junior Clayton Deeb had run-scoring singles in the outburst, while sophomore Ricky Chomicz drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. But the big blow came off the bat of Santoni, who faced Glendon Seal with bases loaded and lifted a 0-1 pitch over the rightfield wall. It was Santoni's second home run this season.

Butler scored in seven of eight innings, while finishing the game with 16 hits. Ten different Bulldogs hit safely in the game and four different players recorded more than one hit.

The Bulldog jumped in front in the first inning on a leadoff double by Bucalo, an infield ground out, and a sacrifice fly by freshman Joe Pauley. Senior Matt Martino opened the second inning with his first home run of the season to give Butler a 2-0 advantage.

The Crusaders jumped on Butler starter Brian Deter for three runs in the top of the third inning, but Martino tied the game in the bottom of the third with a run-scoring single. The two teams traded three runs rallies in the fourth inning, before Butler took control with the fifth inning explosion.

Senior Jim Knytych, who entered the game in relief of Deter in the fourth inning, blanked the Crusaders until the eighth frame. He took a 17-7 lead into the ninth inning, but was tagged for five runs before ending the contest. Knytych improved to 4-5 on the season.

Butler played without senior outfielder Dale Mueller for the fourth straight game. Mueller, who suffered a deep cut on his knee in a win over Wright State, has been sidelined indefinitely.

Kent State 11, Youngstown State 10

Struthers, Ohio -- Youngstown State left 13 runners on base, including five in the final two innings, and allowed Kent State to overcome six errors in an 11-10 loss on Tuesday afternoon at Cene Park.

The loss drops the Penguins to 25-23 while Kent State improves to 33-17.

Kent State led 3-1 until the Penguins scratched six unearned runs in the fourth on three hits and four errors to go up 7-3. The Golden Flashes answered with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. YSU plated a run in the bottom of the sixth to get within one, but Kent State scored two more in the eighth to go up 11-8. The Penguins scored a run in the eighth and the ninth, but they left the bases loaded in the eighth and stranded two more in the ninth.

Jason Seelman picked up the victory for Kent State as he threw two innings of relief and allowed only one unearned run. Joe Antinone did not retire a batter in the sixth and allowed three runs to be charged with the loss.

Erich Diedrich collected three hits for the Penguins while Mike Turjanica went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

An Andrew Davis RBI single and a two-run home run by Kurt Eichorn in the first put the Golden Flashes up 3-0 early off YSU starter Brian Boone, but the Penguins got their first of seven unearned runs in the bottom of the inning when Diedrich brought home J.D. Hannan on a sacrifice fly. Hannan singled and stole second before centerfielder Michael Obyc misplayed Brent Parks' liner to put runners on the corner. After Diedirch's sacrifice, Justin Banks walked to put two runners on again, but starter John Pacella induced an inning-ending double play to keep the margin at two.

In the fourth, YSU put up six runs thanks to four Golden Flashes' errors and three hits. After a single and two errors to start the inning, Turjanica singled to right with the bases loaded to tie the score at 3-3. Parks then hit a grounder to first that was thrown into left field on an attempt to get Turjanica going to second that allowed Turjanica and Brandon Caipen to score. Seelman got the next two hitters out before another error allowed Justin Banks and Parks to score and make the score 7-3.

Kent State answered with three runs that came with two outs in the fifth on an Eichorn RBI single and a two-run triple by Will Vazquez. The Golden Flashes reclaimed the lead in the sixth on one hit and back-to-back Penguins' errors on bunts to go up 9-7.

Diedrich and Banks hit back-to-back doubles with one out in the sixth to get YSU within one, but KSU's Greg Rohan singled past a drawn-in infield to bring home Chuck Moore and Emmanuel Burris to put the Flames up 11-8.

The Penguins loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth, but an RBI single by Phillips accounted for the only run of the inning. After the single to Phillips, Davis got Dustin Thomas to pop out to shallow center, struck out Schultz and got Caipen to foul out.

YSU loaded the bases again with one out in the ninth after a Diedrich single, but Banks hit a sacrifice fly and Phillips flew out to left for the final tally.
