Iowa State 3, UW-Milwaukee 0

Madison, Wis. - Katie Jessen had 11 kills to lead a balanced Iowa State attack as the Cyclones claimed a 30-21, 30-10, 30-21 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Cyclones (21-10) hit .321 for the match while limiting the Panthers (24-6) to a season-low .016 hitting percentage.

Jamie Gabrielsen and Sarah Moore had seven kills apiece to lead UWM, which saw its school-record 15-match winning streak end.

Erin Boeve and Jessica Klein added 10 kills apiece for Iowa State, which will face either Wisconsin or Notre Dame in the second round of the tournament Saturday.

The Cyclones used a big run midway through the first game to claim the win. UWM led 7-3 following two-straight Iowa State errors, but the Cyclones responded by scoring 13 of the next 17 points of the game to build a 16-11 lead. A block by Moore and Melissa David followed by a block from David pulled the Panthers back to within 16-13, but UWM would get no closer the rest of the way. A UWM error pushed the lead to 24-17 and another Panther error made it 28-20 before kills by Boeve and Jessen finished things off for ISU.

Iowa State then controlled the second game from start to finish. The Cyclones scored seven of the first eight points of the game and pushed the lead to 13-3 on a block by Lauren Cummings and Jessica Klein. The lead remained in double digits the rest of the frame, with an ace by Laura Cady making it 17-4 and a kill by Jessen edging the lead to 20-5. The Panthers mounted a brief run, with a pair of kills by Moore sandwiched around an ISU error bringing UWM back to within 20-8. But, ISU rolled off nine of the next 10 points to push itself to the brink of victory before a UWM net violation finished things off the in the second game.

After falling behind by as many as 10 points in the third game, the Panthers rallied to make it a contest. Trailing 21-11, UWM pulled to within 22-17 after a kill by Hegemann and a block by Hegemann and Gabrielsen. The rally then continued after a Cyclone timeout, with a Felsing kill pulling the Panthers within 23-19. But, Iowa State recorded a block on the next UWM swing and then steadily pulled away, eventually finishing the game on a kill by Boeve.
