Indianapolis, Ind. -- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee senior Cheryl Hegemann received Third-Team Academic All-America recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) today, putting her among 20 players to be recognized by the organization.  The awards are sponsored by ESPN the Magazine.

Hegemann was named the League's Player of the Year after propelling the Panthers to a regular-season League title before helping UW-Milwaukee claim the Horizon League Championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.  She led UW-Milwaukee in kills and blocks during the regular season and was also named the League's Offensive Player of the Week twice.  Hegemann is ranked in the top-10 in five Horizon League statistical categories for the season and became UW-Milwaukee's all-time blocks leader earlier this month.

Hegemann stands at second in the League in points per game with an average of 4.65 and is currently ranked third in the circuit in kills with 3.66 per game.  The senior also averaged 1.11 blocks per game to complete her outstanding play at the net.

In the classroom, Hegemann carries a 3.76 grade-point average while pursuing a degree in education.  She also won Horizon League Academic All-League team honors and Academic All-District honors last year while landing a spot on UWM Dean's List.

University of Nebraska outside hitter Sarah Pavan received Academic All-America of the Year honors after leading the Cornhuskers to the top seed in the NCAA tournament.  The University of Toledo's Kate Bean, New Mexico State University's Jackie Choi, Texas A&M University's Christi Hahn, the University of Virginia's Sarah Kirkwood and East Carolina University's Heidi Krug rounded out the student-athletes who were included on this year's first team.

The Panthers will look to extend their 15-match winning streak as UW-Milwaukee is slated to take on Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA Championships this Friday on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
