Lafayette, La. - The UW-Green Bay women's soccer team made the most of its trip to Louisiana this weekend, as the Phoenix, along with the host UL Lafayette and Oklahoma State women's soccer teams, volunteered its Saturday morning to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. UW-Green Bay had the opportunity to work at the Salvation Army in Lafayette, where players helped sort clothes for distribution to evacuees from New Orleans and surrounding areas.

All three teams, along with McNeese State from Fort Charles, La., are participating in the McAlisters Deli South Louisiana Shootout at UL Lafayette.

"From where we are from, people see what is going on down here, but they feel a little bit helpless," said UW-Green Bay head coach Quinn Ross. "They want to help do something, but they don't know how or what they can really do. Our girls knew we were coming down and they really wanted to get involved."

"I think it is an amazing thing to have these teams coming down here," said UL Lafayette head coach Scot Wieland. "The thought of this morning was put before any of the matches this weekend. No one is thinking about soccer. It is just compassion; helping those who need it."
