Wright State's Lloyd, Milwaukee's Busby Earn Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year Awards
INDIANAPOLIS -- Wright State’s Cassandra Loyd (Springfield, Ohio) and Milwaukee’s Durell Busby (Canaan, Tobago) have been named the 2012 Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Year. The pair was chosen by the Horizon League track and field coaches.
Lloyd, a senior for the Raiders, made visits to the Outdoor NCAA Championships her junior and senior seasons. The only female who represented the Horizon League at the NCAA Championships this year, she finished in 19th place in the 100-meter hurdles. For her efforts, she was named an Honorable Mention All-American. After taking 9th place at last year’s NCAAs, she became WSU’s first All-American in track.
Lloyd has had a star-studded career while competing at Wright State. She won the 100-meter hurdles title in each of her four years and also qualified for the NCAA Regionals all four years in the event. Lloyd was named the Horizon League Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2010 and 2011. She is also a three-time Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, winning in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Lloyd was the highest ranked athlete nationally, rising to 12th place at one point during the season.
Recently, she was named as one of two Horizon League nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, which honors graduating student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, community service and leadership.
Busby, a junior for Milwaukee, also had an outstanding outdoor season. He shattered his own school record in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.67 at the NCAA Regional. That mark was good enough to send him on to Des Moines, Iowa for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He ran a 13.77 during the toughest preliminary heat to finish in 12th place and Second-Team All-American status.
Additionally, he earned Olympic Trial time in the 110-meter hurdles and has a chance to run in the London Games for his home nation of Trinidad and Tobago. In Horizon League competition, he won the League title in the 110-meter hurdles and the javelin for the second year in a row. He also competed in the 4x100m relay and ran the fifth-fastest time in Panther history with a time of 41.48 at the outdoor meet.
