Day 1 Results

The men from UIC and the women from UW-Milwaukee currently lead the team standings after day one of the 2007 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Butler University at the Michael A. Carroll Stadium on the IUPUI campus.

 

The men's and women's multi events were held last week in conjunction with the Butler Twilight Meet.  UW-Milwaukee's Jenni Saarinen won the women's heptathlon with a total of 4,597 points.  UIC's Terell Williams defended his title in the men's decathlon, finishing with a total of 6,464 points.    

 

In the men's hammer throw, UW-Milwaukee's Nick Wichert set a Horizon League Championship record with a toss of 194-05.  Youngstown State's Bethany Anderson had a mark of 175-08 in the women's hammer throw to defend her individual title in the event.

 

Detroit's Thomas Grant won the men's long jump for the third time in his career after making a leap of 23-03.25.  Grant won the event at the League Championships in 2004 and 2005.  Jenni Saarinen claimed her second individual event of the meet in the women's long jump.  Saarinen had a leap of 18-05.25 to edge out UW-Milwaukee's Beth Zimmerman as she posted a mark of 18-05.00 to take second place.

 

UIC's Mike Savegnago won the men's pole vault with a mark of 15-01.  Erin Havener claimed the women's pole vault for the Panthers, posting a height of 11-05.75 to set a Horizon League Championship record.

 

Saarinen went on to win her third individual League crown, taking top honors in the women's javelin.  Her winning toss had a mark of 125-01.  The men's javelin was claimed by Terell Williams as he posted a distance of 171-09.

 

UIC's Jim Sulzberger took the League crown in the men's 10,000 meters with a time of 32:18.57.  Loyola's Amanda Domich defended her title in the women's 10,000 meters, posting a time of 38:06.02.

 

In the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase Sinisa Simic took the League crown in a time of 9:38.22.  Butler's Kara Henry picked up the first points for the lady Bulldogs, taking the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase in 11:01.74

 

In the men's 200 meter prelims UWM's Trentin Edwards set a League Championship record with a time of :21.02.  UWM's Timeka Walker bettered her own Championship record in the women's 200 meter prelims, crossing the finish line in :23.94.  Walker had previously owned the record with a time of :24.28, set in 2005. 

 

Action kicks off tomorrow at noon with the men's and women's triple jump, discus, high jump and shot put, as well as the remaining running events.
