26 Horizon League Teams Achieve Perfect APR Scores

INDIANAPOLIS – The Horizon League ranked 14^th among the NCAA’s 33 Division I athletic conferences in the latest overall Academic Performance Rate (APR) numbers released today.

The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.

Horizon League athletic squads posted a 978 average APR (with 1,000 being perfect). That is four points above the national average of 974 and only two points removed from being in the top 10.

The 978 also marks the third straight APR increase by Horizon League squads, up from 970 in 2009-10 and 976 last year.

“While pleased and encouraged by these numbers, we should continue to strive to do better and not be satisfied until 100 percent of our student-athletes are graduating with meaningful degrees,” said Horizon League Commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone.

Twelve of 19 Horizon League sports were in the top half of their respective APR rankings, with six of 19 achieving the top third. Women’s outdoor track was the highest, seventh, followed by baseball and women’s cross country, ninth; women’s indoor track and women’s softball, 10th;   volleyball 11^th;  women’s basketball and women’s cross country, 12^th; and men’s basketball and men’s soccer, 15^th.

Overall, 26 Horizon League squads had perfect APRs of 1,000, and 109 League teams (69 percent) matched or exceeded the NCAA average of 974.
