Horizon League 2011 Spring Academic Honor Roll

INDIANAPOLIS -- A total of 731 student-athletes from all 10 Horizon League institutions and all 19 League sports compile the 2011 Spring Academic Honor Roll. Butler and Milwaukee were the leaders in the classroom, placing 105 and 103 student-athletes, respectively, on the ledger.

“Nothing we do at the league office makes us more proud than to recognize these true student-athletes, whose success in academia and competition so well reflect the values we champion,” Horizon League Commissioner Jon LeCrone said.

11 players of the year were among the 731, including Jake Hibberd (baseball), Celeste Hoewisch (women’s basketball), Kayla Tetschlag (women’s basketball), Kent Monas (men’s golf), Michele Nash (women’s golf), Tess Sito (softball), Brandon Bayliss (men’s tennis), Mariya Kovaleva (women’s tennis), Kris Gauson (indoor track and field), Katie Clark (women’s cross country), and Kerri Schuh (volleyball).

Candidates for the Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify: 1) participation in at least one of the League’s 19 sports during the most recent (or current) season; 2) completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale).

With 105 student-athletes meeting those requirements, Butler paced the Horizon League, with Milwaukee close behind with 103 student-athletes. Valparaiso placed 85, while Loyola had 80 student-athletes on the list; Cleveland State recorded 74 and UIC 60. Wright State and Youngstown State each contributed 57 student-athletes, with Green Bay and Detroit rounding out the list 731, adding 56 and 54 student-athletes, respectively.

Women’s soccer continued to generate the most student-athletes on the list with 92. Track and field/cross country participants accounted for 147 student-athletes - 77 on the women’s side and 70 on the men’s. Men’s soccer and women’s swimming and diving each chipped in 67 student-athletes, while softball (56), volleyball (47), baseball (45) and men’s tennis (40) each had 40 or more honorees.
