INDIANAPOLIS -- With Loyola and Youngstown State opening their seasons on Sunday, all eight Horizon League women’s soccer programs have now played at least one match. After Sunday’s five matches, six have scored results, with all five Horizon League teams in action on the day -- Youngstown State, Cleveland State, Milwaukee, Loyola and Valparaiso -- all collecting wins.
Milwaukee 4, St. Bonaventure 0
After a season-opening scoreless draw, two Milwaukee sophomores scored to lead the Panthers to a dominant 4-0 victory over St. Bonaventure at rainy Engelmman Stadium.
Vienna Behnke drew first blood for Milwaukee (1-0-1) in the 34th minute, coming on a quick restart. Helen Steinhauser and Kelly Lewers restarted the play, with Behnke slotting the ball past the St. Bonaventure keeper.
With rain continually falling at Engelmann, the Panthers had the better run of play throughout the match, with Amy Kauffung essentially sealing the result in the 62nd minute. The 2011 Horizon League Newcomer of the Year drilled a low blast from the top of the box, beating the keeper and staking the Panthers to a two-goal lead.
After a lightning delay kept the teams off the field for nearly an hour, Milwaukee would come back out and add the game’s last two goals. Kauffung slid a cross to the middle of the box, where Sammy Vovos converted for her first goal of the year. Freshman Sara Zawacki would collect her first career goal in the 88th minute to close the scoring.
Jamie Forbes made X saves to record her second consecutive shutout of the year.
Youngstown State 1, Duquesne 0
Youngstown State had just two shots on goal, but the Penguins made the last one count, using a goal in the 84th minutes to carry YSU to a 1-0 victory at Duquesne.
Ali Viola gave Youngstown State (1-0-0) the chance at the win, turning away all seven of Duquesne’s shots on frame before Tyesha Kizer gave the Penguins the victory. Kizer’s goal came on a header, with Chelsey Haney and Katie Hohmann assisting on Kizer’s first career goal.
The win was the first for the YSU women’s soccer program in seven attempts versus Duquesne. For Viola, the shutout was the second of her career.
Cleveland State 2, Bowling Green 1 (ot)
Trailing by a goal in the second half, Cleveland State tied the match halfway through the final frame before getting the game-winner six minutes into overtime to collect a 2-1 win over host Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon.
The victory gave Cleveland State (1-1-0) its first tally in the win column in 2012 and a result after falling behind for the second straight match. Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead into the half after a goal in the 38th minute, but the Vikings would rally in the second half.
Winning a corner kick, Vickie Havas sent a corner into the box, where Chloe Fadenholz converted to knot the match in the 68th minute.
Just two minutes into the overtime, Allie Sieradzki thought she had won the match for Cleveland State, only to have her shot cleared off the line by the Bowling Green defense. However, four minute later, she would convert a pass from Havas and find the back of the net, sending the Vikings to the win.
Loyola 1, DePaul 0
Loyola made an early goal stand up in its season opener, downing DePaul, 1-0, in a matchup of foes just a few stops apart on Chicago’s ‘L’ train.
Loyola (1-0-0) grabbed the early lead in the 21st minute when Kristen Papierski fed a cross to 10 yards from the net to Tricia Stonebraker. Stonebraker’s shot from 12 yards out beat DePaul’s keeper and proved to be the game-winning goal.
DePaul would take 10 shots in the match, but Monica Gonyo stopped all five on frame for the Ramblers. The Ramblers also used a strong offensive effort to pressure the Blue Demons, coming away with 12 shots, seven on net.
Valparaiso 1, Towson 0
Controlling the run of play throughout, Valparaiso earned a late penalty kick to get past visiting Towson, 1-0, on Sunday.
Valparaiso (2-0-0) collected its second straight win to start the year, but was stymied by Towson for much of the match before converting in the final minutes. The Crusaders took 14 shots in the match and put six on net, earning seven corners. The Tigers had just four shots and two on net.
Still, the match was scoreless with just over 10 minutes left in regulation before Jenny Fassbinder was taken down in the box, resulting in a penalty shot awarded to the Crusaders. Trisha Wladecki stepped up and converted what became the game-winning goal at the 78:34 mark of the match.
Kristen Manski picked up her second consecutive shutout to start the year as the Crusaders opened the season with back-to-back shutouts for the first time in program history.
