INDIANAPOLIS - Seven Horizon League volleyball teams were awarded the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 season on Monday. Four teams were also recognized as part of the AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll which honors the Top 25 Division I programs in overall team grade point average (GPA).
Green Bay, IUPUI, Milwaukee, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Wright State, and Youngstown State volleyball teams each recorded at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale to earn the Team Academic Award. A new record 822 teams received the honor, including 145 teams in Division I.
The AVCA awarded Green Bay, IUPUI, Northern Kentucky, and Oakland additional recognition for ranking in the Top 25 among Division I programs in team GPA. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the award and the new AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll was added.
The organization also highlighted IUPUI for reaching its Dig Pink fundraising goal this past season. Dig Pink fundraisers and Team Academic Award recipients raised a total of $91, 671 for breast cancer research in the 2016-17 season.
