INDIANAPOLIS -- UIC sophomore Jasmine Bailey has been named Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Jan. 18-24. The selection marks Bailey's first weekly honor from the League office this season and the second of her career.
Bailey, a forward from St. Louis, Mo., averaged 16.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in a pair of Horizon League games last week. She nailed 12-of-19 (.632) from the floor and 7-of-8 (.875) from the free-throw line.
Bailey's week was highlighted by a career-high 24 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and three steals on Saturday in UIC's 81-72 upset of #17/14 Green Bay. The win was UIC's first over a nationally-ranked opponent in school history.
The Horizon League's 2009 Newcomer of the Year ranks among circuit leaders this season in field-goal percentage (1st, .566), steals (4th, 2.3), blocks (4th, 1.2) and rebounds (5th, 7.7) per game.
UIC, 8-11 overall and 5-3 in conference action, is just one-half game out of first place in the League standings. The Flames return to action on Saturday when they head to cross-town rival Loyola for a 3 p.m. ET contest.
Bailey will become eligible for the Horizon League Network's "People's Choice" award, which is announced each Thursday afternoon. Log on to www.HorizonLeagueNetwork.tv to vote.
