HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES

BUTLER BULLDOGS (11-36 overall, 6-17 HL)

  • Freshman Mike Hernandez picked up his team-leading third win of the season on Wednesday at Cincinnati. He allowed two runs on four hits in four innings for a seven-inning victory over the Bearcats.

  • On Saturday, in the ninth inning of game two against Milwaukee, sophomore Bobby Mosser roped a pinch-hit double which put the tying run on base and set up a two-run rally. The Bulldogs won the game, 7-6.

CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (18-28 overall, 10-12 HL)

  • Cleveland State's win on Sunday was its first over UIC in three seasons under head coach Kevin Kocks.

  • Freshman Bryce Bartch belted his first career homer -- a three-run shot -- in game two on Sunday.

  • Junior Josh Federico finished 4-for-4 with one double and two stolen bases in game one on Sunday.

  • Senior Brad Buell has been hit by a pitch 16 times this season, three shy of the school record.

MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (22-25 overall, 11-9 HL)

  • Milwaukee dropped three heartbreakers over the weekend after leading in each contest. The Panthers lost on walk-off hits to UIC in game one on Friday and Butler in game two on Saturday.

  • Sophomore Doug Dekoning led Milwaukee at the plate last week, batting .368 with five runs in five games.

  • Milwaukee plays Northern Illinois at the home of the Rockford RiverHawks, Road Ranger Stadium, on Tuesday.

  • Milwaukee welcomes Butler to Miller Park for a doubleheader on Thursday. This is the eighth straight season that the Panthers have played a twinbill at the home of the Milwaukee Brewers.

UIC FLAMES (25-21 overall, 16-6 HL)

  • UIC has clinched its eighth consecutive Horizon League regular-season title.

  • The Flames have won nine of their last 11 overall.

  • Senior Adam Worthington, a former closer, owns a team-best three complete games in 2009. His latest nine-inning effort came in a victory on Friday against Milwaukee.

  • Senior Brandon Harwell hit .391 (9-for-23) with eight RBI during UIC's six contests last week.

  • Senior Tony Altavilla hit .467 (7-for-15) with five walks and was hit by a pitch on four occasions last week.

  • Freshman Nathan Orf hit .647 (11-for-17) and scored seven runs last week.

VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (27-21 overall, 12-10 HL)

  • Valparaiso has won nine of its last 11 overall and is 17-6 since April 10.

  • At 27-21 overall, the Crusaders are assured of their first .500 season since 1999.

  • Sophomore Ryan O'Gara crushed his first two homers of the campaign last week -- one against Northwestern and one at Youngstown State.

  • Senior John Snelten went the distance for the first time in his career, allowing just two runs and five hits vs. Northwestern.

WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (28-25 overall, 13-10 HL)

  • Junior Quentin Cate owns a 19-game hitting streak (.512 BA, .841 SLG, .556 OBP, 20 R, 6 2B, 7 HR, 30 RBI). Wright State has posted a 13-6 record during the stretch, which dates back to April 14.

  • Senior Jeff Mercer continues to move up Wright State's single-season charts in several categories. He entered the week second in doubles (25) and ninth in RBI (57). Mercer also began the week tied for fourth in career batting average (.359) and eighth in career doubles (45).

  • The Raiders posted their first winning streak of more than three games last week, winning five straight.

YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (14-34 overall, 10-14 HL)

  • Youngstown State was 5-for-5 in stolen-base attempts over the weekend. Senior John Koehnlein matched a career high by swiping his ninth bag of the campaign.

  • Youngstown State has clobbered eight home runs in eight games this month after hitting just three in 16 games last month. Freshman Jeremy Banks leads the Penguins with three long balls in May.

  • Freshman Jimmy Kinnick allowed just one unearned run in four innings out of the bullpen last week, while junior Anthony Munoz did not allow a run in 3.2 innings of relief.

  • With just two regular-season games left, junior Aaron Swenson has 68 strikeouts and sophomore Phil Klein has 72. If Swenson can reach 70, he and Klein will become the first duo to both have 70 since Youngstown State joined the Horizon League in 2001.
