Around the Horizon League

Bulldogs toppled by Western Kentucky
Butler won its third straight home game with a 6-3 decision over Anderson on Tuesday before being swept in a three-game series at Western Kentucky, lowering the Bulldogs' record to 4-4 overall.

Senior infielder Stephen Gill had four hits in five trips to the plate, while playing three of Butler's four games last week. He was three-for-three in the Bulldogs' 3-2 loss at Western Kentucky. Gill is batting .583 in Butler's first eight games, while senior outfielder Ricky Chomicz is at .385.

The Bulldogs used nine different pitchers in their 6-3 victory over Anderson. Senior Craig Costello earned the win in his one inning of work, while freshman Evan DePotter picked up his first collegiate save.

Flames win opener at #18 Mississippi
UIC (now 3-7) upset No. 18 Mississippi at the Rebels' Oxford-University Stadium on Friday, as junior starter Zach Peterson handcuffed the Rebel bats for his first win of the year. Peterson went six innings and tied his career-high mark for strikeouts in a single game with five.

Senior catcher Justin Johnson has proved to be fully recovered from surgery while showing off his clutch hitting ability. Johnson hit a two-out, two-run triple that scored the go-ahead runs to pave the way for the 4-1 victory.

Young relievers performed well out of the UIC bullpen against Ole Miss over the weekend, as freshman right-hander Adam Worthington picked up his first career save while junior transfer Randy Krick pitched three innings of one-hit ball.

Redshirt freshman first baseman Jake Carr is showing no fear at the plate early on in his career, leading the Flames with a .333 average (7-for-21) in six starts at first.

Panthers also drop top-20 foe at Missouri
UW-Milwaukee claimed one of three games at #20 Missouri over the weekend, with junior right-hander Mike Rauwerdink throwing eight innings and allowing just one run in a 7-2 victory on Sunday. The win pushes UW-Milwaukee to 3-7 on the season.

Senior outfielder Mike Goetz has a hit in all 10 games this season, extending his hitting streak to 18 games dating back to last year. He is steadily approaching the school record of 22 games, set by Scott Gillitzer in the 2001 season.

UW-Milwaukee's defense in the middle infield has been nothing short of outstanding. Between sophomores Jesse Hart (0 errors in 41 chances at 2B) and Grant Berkovitz (1 error in 41 chances at SS), the Panthers have a combined .988 fielding percentage and six double plays turned.

Wright State dropped the first two games of the set by identical 7-2 scores before a 19-2 setback in the finale, giving Wright State a 2-6 overall mark including a five-game losing streak.

Senior outfielder Justin Wilson, who reached base in 48 of 55 games last season, has started the 2006 season off the same way her finished 2005. Wilson has reached base in all eight games the Raiders have played this season, collecting a hit in four straight games at one point during that stretch.

In 2006 the Raiders have yet to be shutout and are averaging 4.2 runs per game.
