HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES
BUTLER BULLDOGS (3-16 overall, 1-2 HL)
Junior Tyler Szymczak worked three innings of relief on Saturday against Valparaiso to pick up Butler's first save of the season and the second of his career.Sophomore Michael Letzter notched his team-leading second home run of the campaign on Saturday against Valpo. He currently ranks second on the squad with .441 slugging percentage.
CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (3-15 overall, 0-3 HL)
Sophomore Josh Lowe batted .385 (5-for-13) in four contests last week and continues to lead the team with a .370 batting average.Senior Josh Hungerman has struck out 34 batters in 34 innings this year, raising his career total to 131 K's.
MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (5-13 overall, 1-0 HL)
Milwaukee hit .306 and scored 15 runs in two games against Central Michigan last week. Sophomore Cole Kraft and freshman Paul Hoenecke each batted .429 on the week (3-for-7).Three Panthers entered the week with hitting streaks of at least six games -- senior Ben Long (7 games), Kraft (6) and junior Tim Patzman (6).
UIC FLAMES (7-13 overall, 3-0 HL)
UIC has won six of its last eight games. The Flames only losses during the stretch were to Big Ten opponent Purdue and Big 12 foe Missouri.UIC scored 60 runs and pounded out 63 hits in five games last week. In a three-game series against Cleveland State, the Flames scored 41 runs and scratched out 35 hits, including a Mar. 21 twinbill total of 33 runs and 25 base knocks.Sophomore Steve McGuiggan entered last week hitting .184 (9-for-49) and three RBI in UIC's first 13 contests, but broke out the slump by batting .429 (9-for-21) with three RBI in five games last week.UIC's rotation of Adam Worthington, Chris Kovacevich and Mike Kool combined to allow just six earned runs in 22.2 innings against Cleveland State, while striking out 16 with only one walk.
VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (7-12 overall, 2-2 HL)
Freshman Ryan Shober went 6-for-11 (.545) over the weekend against Butler after entering the series with five total hits in college.Senior Matt Lenski saw his 12-game hitting streak come to an end in the series finale vs. Butler.Valparaiso's 14 runs and 18 hits in the series opener against Butler represent season highs.Sophomore Jarad Miller earned his 12th career save against Butler in the series opener and is just two shy of the school's all-time record.
WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (10-13 overall, 2-1 HL)
Wright State collected two more one-run victories over the weekend - including its fourth walk-off win of 2009 in the series finale against Youngstown State.Last season, the Raiders were 12-4 in Horizon League doubleheaders. This season, WSU has started off with a 2-0 record after the opening weekend.Junior Alex Kaminsky picked up his first victory as a starter on Saturday against Youngstown State. He owns a 2.95 ERA with nine strikeouts and four walks, while allowing only five doubles in 24 total hits surrendered as a starting pitcher.Freshman Jake Hibberd belted his first career homer in the series finale against YSU. Later in the contest, classmate Tristan Moore collected his first game winning hit, with a triple in the 10th inning against the Penguins.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (4-17 overall, 1-2 HL)
Youngstown State walked 13 batters and plunked two others against Akron on March 18, but allowed just seven free passes in three games over the weekend at Wright State.The Penguins dropped three one-run games last week and have now lost six one-run games this season.Sophomore Joe Iacobucci batted .364 with eight RBI and three runs last week. He hit a team-high .369 last season as a redshirt freshman.Senior John Koehnlein recorded his 200th career hit on Saturday at Wright State. He became just the eighth Penguin in history to reach the plateau. Kendall Schlabach, who recorded 265 base knocks from 2001-04, holds the school record.
