HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES
BUTLER BULLDOGS (4-19 overall, 2-4 HL)
Butler has won three of its last six games. The stretch includes a pair of Horizon League victories.On Friday, the Bulldogs posted their first win at Wright State since March 18, 2006.Sophomore Luke Duncan has boosted his team-best batting average to .407 (22-for-54).
CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (6-15 overall, 0-3 HL)
Freshman Alex Johnson has hit safely in 10 straight affairs, which marks CSU's longest streak this season.Freshman Nate Dick earned his first career win by pitching the final three innings on Sunday against Case Western Reserve. He allowed just two hits, did not allow a run and fanned three.Senior Josh Hungerman has struck out 43 batters in 39 innings this year, raising his career K total to 140.
MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (5-15 overall, 1-2 HL)
Milwaukee had three individuals hit .455 or better against Valparaiso. Senior Josh Groves went 6-for-11 (.545), sophomore Doug Dekoning went 6-for-12 (.500) and junior Shaun Wegner went 5-for-11 (.455).Senior Brad Lusti threw 7.1 innings against Valparaiso, striking out six and walking one. Senior Andy Hetebrueg worked seven innings, striking out seven and walking none. Freshman Kyle Schmidt fanned six and walked one in a five-frame outing.
UIC FLAMES (10-13 overall, 6-0 HL)
UIC has won nine of its last 11 games and three in a row heading into this week.All three of UIC's starting pitchers worked eight innings in the series vs. Youngstown State. Senior Adam Worthington allowed just two runs and struck out five in the opener. Junior Chris Kovacevich gave up one run and fanned seven in his outing. Senior Mike Kool then capped the stretch by allowing just two runs and five hits in the finale.Sophomore Jason Ganek owns a team-best .337 batting average (29-for-86) after hitting .381 (8-for-21) last week.Senior Tony Altavilla batted .500 (8-for-16) with four doubles, a homer and three RBI in five starts last week.Tuesday's 6-4 victory over Missouri was UIC's fourth over a BCS conference school this season. The Flames have already claimed wins over Vanderbilt (Southeastern), Northwestern (Big Ten) and Purdue (Big Ten).
VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (9-12 overall, 4-2 HL)
Sophomore Jarad Miller collected two saves on Friday vs. Milwaukee, tying Adam Knobel for the career record at Valparaiso (14).Sophomore Andrew Quinnette went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI over the weekend against UWM.Freshman Kyle Gaedele has extended his hitting streak to eight games.Valparaiso has already swept three doubleheaders this season after taking just one in all of 2008.
WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (13-14 overall, 4-2 HL)
Four of Wright State's five starting pitchers threw at least five innings last week. Vs. Butler, all three Raider starters tossed six innings and allowed only three earned runs total. Junior Alex Kaminsky struck out a career-best nine in his start, while senior Rylan Ostrosky shutout Butler for six frames. Sophomore Michael Woytek surrendered only two earned runs against BU with five K's in his first win of the season.Wright State is hitting .310 in Horizon League games this season. The Raiders have recorded 65 hits, 32 runs and a .339 on-base percentage during the stretch. Senior Jeff Mercer paces all WSU players with a .478 batting average in conference games, while boasting a .520 on-base percentage.Wright State posted one of its biggest wins in school history on Tuesday when it defeated then-#1 Georgia in Athens. WSU tallied seven runs in the fourth inning and never looked back in the upset.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (4-20 overall, 1-5 HL)
Youngstown State has lost eight games by one run, four of which have been Horizon League games. All four of those losses have come when the Penguins' opponent has scored in its last at bat.Dating back to Feb. 22 at Georgia, 16 of YSU's last 22 games have been within one run in the sixth inning or later. The Penguins have come up on the short end in 12 of those 16 games.Youngstown State will play 14 of its next 16 games at home, including all four this week. The Penguins played 23 of their first 24 on the road this season.
