HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES
BUTLER BULLDOGS (6-23 overall, 2-7 HL)
Butler is in the midst of five home games in nine days. The Bulldogs, who defeated Wabash College on Tuesday, host UIC in a three-game Horizon League series over the weekend and SIU-Edwardsville next Wednesday.Sophomore Luke Duncan continues to lead the Bulldogs at the plate, boasting a team-high .403 batting average, .452 slugging percentage and .479 on base percentage.
CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (9-17 overall, 2-4 HL)
Cleveland State has won six of its last eight games. The stretch includes two victories over both Valparaiso and Case Western Reserve, and one over both Ohio and Eastern Michigan.Senior Josh Hungerman has struck out a Horizon League-best 52 batters in 45 innings this season, raising his career total to 149 strikeouts.Cleveland State hit .329 as a team in five games last week, while the CSU pitching staff held opponents to a .238 average over those same five games.Senior Drew Fronczek earned his third save of the year by recording the final three outs in Saturday's second tilt vs. Valparaiso.
MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (9-17 overall, 3-3 HL)
Milwaukee improved to 16-3 all-time in home openers with a 6-3 win over UIC on Friday. The Panthers played their first 21 games on the road this season.Freshman Cameron Amsrud has appeared in 17 of 26 contests to this point in the season. He is on pace to set a single-season record for appearances. Amsrud is 2-0 with a 3.46 ERA.Junior Shaun Wegner owns an 11-game hitting streak, which is UWM's longest in 2009. He is 15-for-43 (.349) during the stretch.
UIC FLAMES (12-15 overall, 7-2 HL)
Senior Adam Worthington, already a two-time Horizon League Pitcher of the Week in 2009, has allowed just five earned runs in his last 24 innings as a starter (1.88 ERA). The converted reliever also has 19 strikeouts in that span.Senior Derrick Miramontes, who went from starter in 2008 to bullpen ace this season, has not allowed a run in his last seven appearances. During that span, he has gone 3-0 with three saves and 12 strikeouts in 13.2 IP.In addition to owning UIC's top on-base percentage (.457 OBP), senior Brandon Harwell has been UIC's best hitter in Horizon League play thus far with a .455 average (10-for-22).UIC is in the midst of nine road games in 17 days. The stretch includes a three-game Horizon League series at Butler and three-game non-conference set at Creighton.
VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (10-15 overall, 5-4 HL)
Junior Josh Wallace had at least one hit in each game over the weekend and batted .385 in the series.Junior Kyle Muhlsteff owns a nine-game hitting streak after posting a seven-game string earlier in the year.Sophomore Jarad Miller earned his sixth save of the campaign on Saturday in the opener at Cleveland State and now has the school's career record alone (15).Valparaiso pitchers have recorded nine saves in the 10 wins this season.
WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (15-16 overall, 4-2 HL)
Freshman Michael Schum yielded a 10.12 ERA over his first three career appearances, but has not allowed an earned run over his last 14 outings. Overall, he is 3-4 with a 2.08 ERA this season.Wright State took a break from Horizon League play last weekend to face off with LeMoyne. WSU took two of three games in the series.Wright State heads to Milwaukee this weekend for its first Horizon League road series of the year. The Raiders were 9-2 on the road in League contests during the 2008 regular season and 9-4 on the road in 2007.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (7-20 overall, 4-5 HL)
YSU earned its first three-game sweep of a Horizon League opponent since March 2007 (also vs. Butler).Youngstown State's starting pitchers combined to hold Butler to three earned runs in 24 innings over the weekend. Junior Aaron Swenson and sophomore Cody Dearth both picked up complete-game wins in Saturday's twinbill.Youngstown State hit .410 with runners in scoring position against Butler, had seven two-out RBI and committed just one error in 27 innings. Six of YSU's eight runs in Sunday's 8-4 victory came with two outs.The Penguins scored more second-inning runs over the weekend (4) than they did in their first 24 games combined (1).The Penguins now have a 2.96 ERA in nine Horizon League contests.
