HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES

BUTLER BULLDOGS (6-26 overall, 2-10 HL)

  • Last Tuesday's 5-0 win over Wabash was Butler's first shutout since topping Huntington, 18-0, on March 13, 2007.

  • Butler's 18 runs on Wednesday at IPFW were its most since plating 22 against Milwaukee on March 29, 2008.

  • The Bulldogs entered the week as the Horizon League leader in walks, drawing 121 through 32 games.

  • Freshman Mike Hernandez leads Butler and ranks ninth in the Horizon League with 31 strikeouts this season. His 4.4 strikeout-to-walk ratio is also tops in the loop.

CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (10-19 overall, 3-6 HL)

  • Cleveland State starters pitched 25.2 out of 26 innings over the weekend at Youngstown State. The group allowed just five earned runs on 18 hits and combined to strike out 13.

  • Senior Brian Long has tossed back-to-back complete games, including an eight-inning performance in a 1-0 loss on Sunday at Youngstown State. He has lowered his ERA to 6.75 after having it above 10.00 just two starts ago.

  • Senior Brad Buell has nine stolen bases this season, raising his career total to 32. That ties him for third place on the all-time list at CSU, just nine shy of second place.

  • After missing eight games with a hamstring injury, junior Ryan Franks returned last week and hit .500 (8-for-16) with four runs, four doubles and two RBI in four games last week.

MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (12-17 overall, 6-3 HL)

  • Milwaukee went 5-0 last week, batting .400 (68-for-170) as a team. Five Panthers hit over .450 -- senior Shawn Wozniak (.667), freshman Paul Hoenecke (.579), junior Tim Patzman (.500), senior Johann Andes (.467) and sophomore Cole Kraft (.467).

  • All five games were at home, moving UWM to 7-1 at Henry Aaron Field in 2009. The sweep of Wright State was the first weekend sweep against WSU since May 2005.

  • The Milwaukee offense has now recorded 10-or-more hits in seven straight games. Its eight doubles on Friday were just one off the school record of nine.

  • The UWM pitching staff carries a 3.76 ERA in League play and has walked two or fewer batters in seven of the past 10 games.

UIC FLAMES (15-15 overall, 10-2 HL)

  • UIC has won 14 of its last 18 games since beginning the season 1-11.

  • UIC hit .336 (37-for-11) as a team in three games over the weekend at Butler. Senior Adam Worthington has posted a quality start in six of his seven outings this season. In his last four starts, Worthington is 2-1 with a 1.38 ERA, striking out 31 while issuing just seven walks in 32.3 innings.

  • Senior Derrick Miramontes has recorded a pair of saves in two different ways over the weekend at Butler. He induced the final out in Saturday's twinbill opener before earning a three-inning save against the Bulldogs in the nightcap.

  • Derrick Miramontes is 3-0 with five saves in his last nine appearances out of the bullpen. He has an 0.53 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 17 innings in that same span, allowing just one run and seven hits.

  • UIC will play Saturday's contest against Creighton at Rosenblatt Stadium -- home of the NCAA College World Series.

VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (15-15 overall, 5-4 HL)

  • Valparaiso's four-game sweep of North Dakota was its first since the 2006 season against Southern Utah.

  • Valparaiso's pitching staff turned in a season-best 2.35 ERA in the four games against North Dakota.

  • Senior Dan DeBruin hit .364 in the series vs. UND, while junior Kyle Muhlsteff collected four RBI.

  • Valparaiso has swept five doubleheaders this season, four more than all of 2008.

WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (15-19 overall, 4-5 HL)

  • Over the weekend at Milwaukee, Wright State was swept in a League series for the first time since the 2005 season when it dropped four games at Youngtown State. The Raiders compiled a 60-34 mark in conference action between the sweeps.

  • Freshman Jake Hibberd went 5-for-10 in three starts last week. He drove in six runs, recorded two doubles and a grand slam.

  • Freshman Jordan Marker logged 3.2 innings of scoreless relief in the game two of the series at Milwaukee. His season ERA now sits at 1.86, which is the best figure in WSU's bullpen.

YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (9-21 overall, 6-6 HL)

  • Youngstown State has won five of its last six games, all against Horizon League opponents. The Penguins swept Butler two weeks ago and took two of three from Cleveland State last weekend.

  • Junior Aaron Swenson has won three of his four starts against Horizon League opponents. All three of his wins have been complete-game efforts. Swenson has struck out 21 batters in his past two outings, including a career-high 11 against Cleveland State on Saturday.

  • The Penguins have run into major weather issues over the past three weeks. Ten straight games had been either cancelled or moved prior to Saturday's doubleheader with Cleveland State.
