INDIANAPOLIS -- UIC junior midfielder Ivan Stanisavljevic (Belgrade, Serbia) has been named Horizon League Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, for the week beginning Sept. 12. The accolade is the second of Stanisavljevic’s career and first since Sept. 28, 2009.
Stanisavljevic helped the Flames go 2-0 at the UIC Soccer Classic, collecting four goals and two assists on the week. UIC won both matches in double overtime, knocking off SIU-Edwardsville, 3-2, on Friday, before downing Drake by the same score on Sunday afternoon.
The junior knotted the match against SIU-Edwardsville with his first goal of the year in the 16th minute, coming on a strike from 25 yards out. Jesus Torres would collect UIC’s second and third tallies on the night, with Stanisavljevic assisting on both the equalizer and game-winner with just over three minutes to play in double overtime.
On Sunday, Stanisavljevic put the Flames on the board first, heading in a cross in the sixth minute. The junior converted a penalty kick in the 43rd minute to give UIC a brief 2-1 lead before the teams entered overtime tied at 2.
In double overtime,Stanisavljevic then put the finishing touches on the dramatic win, receiving the ball just outside the 18-yard box and carving through one defender to beat the keeper on the near post with just 18.6 seconds remaining in the match.
The 10-point weekend put Stanisavljevic at the top of the League’s points leaders with 13 on the year. In 2009, Stanisavljevic led UIC with seven goals and 14 points before a one-point campaign in 2010.
UIC will be on the road this weekend for its lone match, traveling to Dayton for a Sept. 23 contest against the Flyers. The match will start from Baujan Field at 7 p.m. ET.
