INDIANAPOLIS – Youngstown State’s Brandi Brown and Butler’s Ronald Nored have been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Month for the month of January.

Brown, a women’s basketball player for Youngstown State, had 26 points against Loyola, 25 vs. UIC, 23 at Butler and 21 points at Green Bay. In eight games, the junior scored 145 points, an average of 18.1 per game during the month of January. YSU has won more than 10 games this season, which is more than they won in the previous three years combined. Brown ranks third in the Horizon League in scoring (17.1 ppg) and fourth in rebounding (9.5 rpg).

Off the field, she holds a 3.69 GPA. Brown was a 2010-11 All-Horizon League Academic selection and posted a 4.00 GPA this past semester. She is a communications major at YSU.

Nored, a men’s basketball player at Butler, led the Bulldogs in scoring, assists and steals during the month of January. He also recorded career-highs for both rebounds (nine versus Youngstown State and Milwaukee) and assists (nine versus Loyola). Nored moved into second place on Butler’s all-time list for steals and is now No. 4 in all-time assists. The senior hit a team-high 38 (of 51) free throws during the month and also led the Bulldogs in minutes played (33.2).

The early/middle childhood education major was named one of 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and was named to the 2011-12 Capital One Academic All-District V Team. In addition, he was also named to the 2010-11 Horizon League Academic All-League Team and has been the subject of multiple features (NCAA, Indianapolis Star, etc.) for his role as a student-teacher in the Indianapolis area all while maintaining a 3.647 in the classroom

The Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month recognizes outstanding academic and athletic achievements. To be eligible for the honor, the student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the month’s competition. Winners are selected by the League’s faculty athletics representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
