INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Detroit Mercy senior Sandi Brown has been named Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of March 2-8. The selection marks Brown's first career weekly honor from the League office.
A native of Toledo, Ohio, Brown averaged 17.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals in a pair of Horizon League games last week. The guard/forward made 11-of-24 (.458) from the floor, 3-of-5 from three-point range and 10-of-14 from the free-throw stripe.
Brown helped Detroit post a 63-55 victory over the University of Illinois at Chicago on Thursday and 57-49 win over Loyola University Chicago on Saturday. The back-to-back conference victories were UDM's first since Feb. 28-March 1, 2008.
Brown was recently honored as an All-Horizon League second-team selection. She currently ranks third in the conference in scoring (13.0), fifth in rebounding (6.7), fifth in free-throw percentage (.786), sixth in blocked shots (0.8) and seventh in steals (2.2).
Eighth-seeded Detroit (11-18 overall, 7-11 HL) hosts ninth-seeded Loyola (8-20, 3-15) in the first round of the 2009 Speedway Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship on Monday at 7 p.m. ET.
The winner meets the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (26-3, 18-0), which owns an 18-game winning streak and is the tournament's top seed. The Phoenix will host the semifinal and championship rounds with a quarterfinal victory on Wednesday.
