Butler University swept both the team and individual titles at the 2005 Horizon League Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29 at John Bryan State Park in Yellow Springs, Ohio.



Butler captured its eighth consecutive Horizon League men's cross country championship, defeating Loyola University by only five points, 31-36. The two schools combined to claim eight of the top ten individual finishes.



University of Illinois at Chicago placed third with 85 points, followed by University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (100), Youngstown State (126), University of Detroit Mercy (182), Wright State (188) and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (193).



Butler junior Andy Rayner captured the individual League crown with a time of 24:21, narrowly edging Loyola's Sam Romanoski at 24:23. Butler senior Nick Goodliffe finished in third place with a time of 24:34, followed by Robert Wade of Loyola at 24:38. Butler's Scott Overall finished fifth at 24:39, while UW-Milwaukee senior Josh Nygren came in sixth at 24:41. Butler junior Andrew Toward rounded out the top seven at 24:54.



On the women's side, Butler captured its fourth consecutive League title as the team finished with 22 points, outdistancing runner-up Loyola (69) by 47 points. UW-Milwaukee finished third with 82 points, followed by UIC (115), Detroit (156) and UW-Green Bay (178). Wright State finished seventh with 185 points, followed by Youngstown State (190) and Cleveland State (215).



Senior Victoria Mitchell of Butler captured her second consecutive individual cross country championship, finishing the 5K race in 17:16. Mitchell's teammate Jenni Pereira finished second with a time of 17:25, while Butler junior Ava Hutchinson followed at 17:48. Detroit senior Andrea Karl finished fourth with a time of 17:58, followed by UIC junior Laura Macias in fifth at 18:04. Butler senior Katie Stuckey (18:06) and UW-Milwaukee sophomore Angie Huebner (18:07) rounded out the top seven.



Loyola freshman Ryan Kuphall was named Horizon League Men's Newcomer of the Year. Kuphall finished the 8K race in 12th place with a time of 25:04. Jessie Morgenthal of Loyola earned Horizon League Women's Newcomer of the Year honors. Morgenthal completed the women's 5K in 18:15, good for 11th place. Butler head coach Joe Franklin earned both Men's and Women's Coach of the Year honors.
