Butler 3, Wright State 0

GREEN BAY, Wis. ---In a rematch of the regular season finale, fifth-seeded Butler faced fourth-seeded Wright State in the first round of the Horizon League Women's Soccer Tournament.   Unlike that game, which the Raiders won 1-0, the Bulldogs pulled out a 3-0 victory to advance to a semifinals match-up with UW-Milwaukee.

Wright State, which had entered the tournament with a League-high 11 wins, took 15 shots on the match, including 12 in the second half.  The Raiders couldn't capitalize, however, and suffered their fifth shutout of the season.  The name of the game was efficiency for Butler, as the Bulldogs managed to turn only five shots into three scores.

Marianne Schilling recorded the only goal of the first half, a one-timer off the cross from the right at 8:11. Senior and Horizon League First Team All-League honoree Meredith Buemi had the assist.  Butler goaltender Kirby Zwickel had one save for the period.  She added four more in the second period for a total on five on the day.

Butler sophomore Ashley Twehues tallied an unassisted marker at 54:02 and Meredith Buemi added a shot on breakaway from Kristin Harnest with less than ten minutes remaining to push the score to 3-0.

With the win, Butler improved to 8-9-2.  The Bulldogs will face UW-Milwaukee on Friday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. in the first semifinal match of the day.

The loss ended the Raider's six match unbeaten streak, which dated back to a 0-1 loss to UW-Green Bay on October 7.   The Raiders end their season at 11-5-3.

The 2005 Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship will be held Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 3-6, at Aldo Santaga Stadium on the campus of UW-Green Bay.  The winner of Sunday's championship match will earn the League's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship which will begin Nov. 11 at campus sites.
