INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler University junior cross country runners Kent Wories and Genni Gardner have been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Sept. 5).

Wories placed fourth in the 49-entry Butler Invitational as the first meet of the 2006 cross country schedule. His timing of 21:52 made Wories one of only six runners to complete the course in under 22 minutes. In the classroom, Wories owns a 3.965 grade-point average as a finance major. He was a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll in each semester last year.

Gardner took first place among 53 runners at the Butler Invitational, finishing 27 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor (Sarah Kehe of Ball State University) with a time of 18:28. Gardner earned CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V honors for her efforts on the BU cross country and track teams last year, when she finished fourth in the 5,000 meters at the League's Outdoor Championships and second in the mile at the indoor summit.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
