Men's & Women's Tennis Championship Page

Different Year, same story at the 2006 Horizon League Men's & Women's Tennis Championships, as both the Butler University men and University of Illinois at Chicago women repeat at Horizon League champions.

The Bulldogs, who entered the championship as the number one seed, defeated No. 2 UIC, 4-1, to earn their fifth consecutive title, while the UIC women claimed their tenth consecutive crown by defeating Butler, 4-1.

First Team All-Horizon League selection James Low picked up two victories on the match, winning at No. 2 doubles with Andy Bartish and defeating Paul Glendenning at No. 2 singles. Eric Fey picked up the lone point for UIC, winning at No. 6 singles over Eric Breitenbach.

On the women's side, UIC earned three victories at the No. 3-5 singles positions, and also claimed the doubles point.  Molly Smith and Grace Gill-Morlis went 2-0 on the day, each winning at singles and defeating Chelsey Casperson and Carrie Rachon as a No. 3 doubles team.

With the wins, the Butler men and UIC women both advance to the respective NCAA Tennis Championship Tournaments.

In the days other matches, Youngstown State University earned third place, defeating Wright State University, 4-2.  The Penguins, who entered the championship as the number two seed, claimed the doubles point and wins at three of the four lower singles positions, including a win by All- Horizon League Second Team selection Gina Peretti over Christa Ames at No. 4.

In the men's third-place match, Cleveland State University defeated the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 4-0.  CSU took the doubles point and earned wins at the number one, four and five singles positions to earn the victory.  UW-Green Bay, hurting from the loss of Horizon League Player of the Year Tim Prudlow, who withdrew from the championship with an illness, took fourth-place honors after finishing third in the regular season.

Cleveland State defeated University of Detroit Mercy, 4-2, in the women's fifth-place match. The Vikings, who finished the regular season at 4-3 in League play, were led by Second Team All-League selection Morgan Ungerott, who claimed victories at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles.   Detroit's Annie Moore, named Horizon League Player of the Year at the pre-championship banquet, earned a win at No. 1 singles over Sarah Galon to lead the Titans.
