Indianapolis, Ind. - Bill Mattingly, golf coach at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis for the past 17 years, has been named men's and women's golf coach at Butler University. He'll begin his duties immediately.

Mattingly, a life member of the Indiana Professional Golfers Association, began coaching the boys' golf team at Cathedral in 1990. He added coaching responsibility for the girls' golf team in 2003. He guided Cathedral teams to 32 invitational titles and six state championship appearances. His boys' team placed fifth in the state tournament this spring after finishing in a tie for 11th in 2006. He was named Ball State Alumni Coach of the Year for both boys and girls golf in 2006.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge of coaching student-athletes at a higher level," said Mattingly, a teaching professional at Sahm and Saddlebrook Golf Courses in Indianapolis. "I feel that Butler offers the chance to continue the kind of success we had at Cathedral. There is considerable talent at the high school level throughout the state of Indiana, and the junior programs everywhere are getting so much better. This is a very good opportunity for me."

Mattingly, a varsity golf letterwinner at Ball State (1971-72), has been actively involved in golf in the Indianapolis area for more than three decades. He served as head professional at Thatcher Golf Course in Indianapolis from 1981 to 1984 and at South Grove Golf Course from 1985 to 1992. He was owner of Supreme Golf and Driving Range in Carmel from 1993 to 2003.

An accomplished player, the new Butler head coach won the Indiana Assistant's Championship in 1979, and he was Indiana PGA Champion in 1983. He's an eight-time qualifier for the National Club Professional Championship.

Mattingly earned a B. S. degree in marketing from Ball State in 1976. He and his wife, Maureen Sullivan, have four sons, William (26), Daniel (24), Charles (18) and Peter (17).
