INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler University junior pitcher Jon Dages (baseball) has been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (May 22).

Dages recorded his team-leading sixth victory of the season on Friday (May 18), scattering 11 hits over seven innings of work in the Bulldogs' 11-4 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Dages struck out six Panther batters while walking only one, lowering his season earned-run average to 3.50 (fifth-best in the League). His 61 strikeouts this spring rank second in the League, as well.

In the classroom, Dages owns a 3.293 grade-point average as a finance major. He was an Academic All-Horizon League selection last spring, and has earned a spot on the Horizon League's Academic Honor Roll in each of the last three semesters.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.

OTHER MALE NOMINEE:

Josh Groves, UW-Milwaukee (baseball, sophomore, 3.28, marketing) helped the Panthers to a 2-2 record, hitting .467 (seven-for-15) with three doubles in four games over the weekend. He drove in a pair of runs, and is now hitting .473 with 11 runs scored and 17 RBI in 17 games during the month of May.
