Butler Takes on Penn in CBI Quarterfinals

PHILADELPHIA – The tenant of one of the most historic college basketball venues, Butler will head to the “Cathedral of College Basketball” for a quarterfinal matchup with Penn in the 2012 College Basketball Invitational, presented by Zebra Pen. The game will be carried by HDNet at 8 p.m. ET.

Butler (21-14) is playing in Philadelphia for the first time since 1994, when they met then-Midwestern Collegiate Conference foe LaSalle. However, the Bulldogs will be making their first appearance in the Palestra. The arena, which has been home to Penn basketball for more than eight decades, was opened in January of 1927, one year before Butler played its first game in Hinkle Fieldhouse.

The Bulldogs advanced to the quarterfinals of the CBI with a 75-58 victory at home over Delaware in the first round of the tournament. That win lifted Butler to 21-14 on the season and set up a first-ever meeting with Penn.

The Quakers (20-12) advanced in the CBI with a 74-63 opening-round victory over Quinnipiac at the Palestra.

The winner of the Butler-Penn game will face the winner of the Pitt-Princeton contest in a CBI semifinals game on Wednesday, March 21.
