INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler University will serve as the host institution for the 2009 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships and the 2009 Softball Championship. All eight of the League's women's track teams and all seven men's will converge Feb. 28-March 1 at DePauw University's Tennis and Track Center in Greencastle, Ind.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is the five-time defending champion on the men's side, while Youngstown State University captured the 2008 women's title and has won three of the last five.
Legends Field in Pendleton, Ind., will be the site for the 2009 softball championship, which will feature all nine League teams in a double-elimination format on May 7-9. Legends Field is located on the campus of Pendleton Heights High School. Wright State University is the two-time defending League champion after blanking top-seed Cleveland State University 2-0 in the final this past spring.
Ticket prices for both events will be announced at a later date.
Butler previously has hosted the League's indoor track and field championships at the DePauw Tennis and Track Center in 2002, 2004 and 2005.
"Our staff is excited to host the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships," said Matt Roe, Butler's head track and field coach. "DePauw has been gracious in extending to us the use of their top facility. Indianapolis has long been regarded for its strong running community, and we are looking forward to a well-attended championship competition."
Butler most recently hosted the softball championship in 2000 at Indianapolis' North Central High School The University of Illinois at Chicago won the third of five straight titles that season with a 4-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in the championship game.
"Butler University is excited to have the opportunity to host the 2009 Horizon League Softball Championship," Bulldogs head softball coach Jeanne Rayman said. "The Pendleton Heights High School softball complex is one of the top facilities in the state of Indiana, and the Pendleton Heights softball program and Pendleton community are very excited to have the opportunity to partner with Butler to host this event."
