MILFORD, Mich. -- Butler University claimed the 2009 Horizon League Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships Saturday afternoon at Kensington Metroparks. Butler won the men's race for the 12th straight season and the women's race for the seventh time in eight years.

The Butler men took the top six spots and tallied 15 points, equaling an all-time record. Butler senior Andy Baker won the men's 8K race -- his third consecutive title -- with a time of 25:15.6. Baker was followed by senior Tom Boardman (25:39.8), junior Justin Roeder (25:39.9), junior Madison Roeder (25:40.3), senior Rob Mullett (25:40.6) and senior Kris Gauson (25:41.3).

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee freshman John Simons placed ninth with a time of 26.05.3, and earned Men's Newcomer-of-the-Year honors. Loyola University Chicago finished second with 66 points, followed by Milwaukee (93), the University of Illinois at Chicago (98) and University of Detroit Mercy (126).

The Butler women came across with the top three finishers, totaling 21 points. Freshman Lauren McKillop, who placed first in the entire 5K race with a time of 18:48.3, was named Women's Newcomer of the Year. McKillop was trailed by freshmen teammates Katie Clark (18:49.0) and Shelbi Burnett (18:58.5).

Loyola placed second in the women's race with 68 points, followed by Milwaukee (96), Youngstown State University (116) and UIC (143).

Butler's Matt Roe was honored as the Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's side.
