Women's Day One Results
Galena, Ohio - Day one of the 2005 Horizon League Golf Championships is in the books as Butler's women and Detroit's men lead at the Royal American Golf Course in Galena, Ohio.
Poor weather conditions, including a few moments of rain and sleet, hampered the field throughout the day's rounds.
Butler leads the women's side after a two-round total of 655 (328-327), which is 27 strokes ahead of second place Youngstown State (682). Last season's champion, Loyola, sits in third (695), while Cleveland State (711) and Detroit (732) round out the rest of the women's field.
Butler's Lynnsey Showers, last year's women's medalist, currently leads the women after putting together two solid rounds for the Bulldogs. Showers opened round one with a 76, before finishing with a day-one best 74, for a two-round total of 150.
Showers is followed by UDM's Ashley Hamilton in second place (80-83--163), while Loyola's Nicole Puch (82-83) and Butler's Sarah Swanson (81-84) sit tied for third as each tallied 165 on the day. Rounding out the top five is Youngstown State's Felicia Ciotola, who carded a two-round 166 (88-78).
The men's side is a lot tighter race, as Detroit (301-288--589) leads second-place Wright State (297-293--590) by just one stroke. Cleveland State (596) and UW-Green Bay (597) battle for spots three and four, while Butler (609), Youngstown State (622) and Loyola (623) round out the men's field after day one.
Cleveland State's Doug Barber and Detroit's Kyler Murphy lead the individual race as both carded two-round totals of 143. Murphy tied for the day's best round, as he carded a 69 in round two, after scoring a 74 in the opening round for the Titans. Barber was one of the most consistent golfers on the day as he tallied a 71 and 72 to lead the Vikings.
Wright State's Brandon Judy sits closely in third after tallying a two-round score of 144 (75-69), while UW-Green Bay's Eric Mabee follows in fourth place (71-74--145). YSU's Nate Komsa (76-71--147) and Detroit's Mark Sommerfeld (75-72--147) round out the top-five on the men's side.
The championship round begins on Tuesday, May 3 at 8:30 a.m. EST. Once again, the forecast calls for chilly temperatures in the morning, but is predicted to "heat up" to the low-50's by mid-day.
