INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler junior Bob Akin and Valparaiso senior Tyler Deetjen have been named Horizon League Baseball Players of the Week for the period of Feb. 13-19.

Akin picked up Batter of the Week accolades after going 6-for-13 (.462) at the plate in Butler’s four-game series at Fresno State. In Butler’s 12-9 win over Fresno State on Saturday, Akin singled in a run to help the Bulldogs battle back from an 8-0 deficit to win.

The junior from Carmel, Ind., went 3-for-4 in the third game of the series and 2-for-4 in Sunday’s series finale.

Butler returns to the diamond this weekend when it travels to West Tennessee to take on UT-Martin in a three-game series.

Deetjen notched Pitcher of the Week honors after pitching seven scoreless innings in Valparaiso’s season-opening win over Murray State. He scattered four hits over the seven opening innings, striking out four with only one walk. The Saint Charles, Ill., native left with a 2-0 lead and finished with a no decision as Valpo won in 13 innings, 5-2.

Valparaiso heads to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend to face Arkansas in a three-game series beginning Friday, Feb. 24.

Other Horizon League top performers (Feb. 13-19)
Cale Tassi, Milwaukee, Jr., RHP - Tassi limited 22nd-ranked East Carolina to six hits and one run in his six innings pitched. He left the game with a 3-1 lead.

Will Hagel, Valparaiso, Sr., IF - Hagel had a hit in all three Valpo games. He extended his hitting streak to 16 games, dating back to 2011.

Brad Schnitzer, Butler, Sr., LHP - He was credited with Butler’s 12-9 win over Fresno State. For the weekend, 4.1 scoreless innings pitched with seven strikeouts.

Jeremy Banks, Youngstown State, Sr., 1B - Banks posted at least two hits in all three of Youngstown State’s games. Finished the weekend batting .571 with four doubles on eight hits.
