INDIANAPOLIS --- Butler University freshman first baseman Erin Falkenberry has been named the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week, while Valparaiso University freshman righthander Alex Lagesse has earned Pitcher-of-the-Week accolades for the week ending March 15, the League office announced Wednesday (March 18).

Falkenberry batted .370 in eight games on Butler's spring-break trip with 10 hits, including a team-high four home runs at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. She hit three home runs to lead the Bulldogs (5-10) past Yale University 7-4 and had another in Butler's 7-6 victory over Bucknell University. Falkenberry posted a team-high 10 runs-batted-in on the trip and also had two doubles and nine runs scored as Butler went 5-4 for the week.

Lagesse was 2-0 with a 1.65 earned-run average in three games last week at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. She threw Valparaiso's first no-hitter since April 16, 2007, in a 12-0, five-inning victory over Bryant University on March 9, allowing just two walks and no runners past first base. Lagesse folllowed with a complete-game, five-hitter in a 4-1 victory over the University at Buffalo, striking out five, and then got a no-decision in five innings against the University of Pennsylvania.



Comprised of 10 public and private institutions of higher learning, the Horizon League is an NCAA Division I athletics conference that sponsors 19 intercollegiate championships and is headquartered in Indianapolis. The League and its member institutions aspire to teach young people, through athletic competition, the value of learning, service to others and personal responsibility.



Horizon League teams have enjoyed national success in a variety of sports in recent years, most notably in men's basketball, in which its teams have advanced to the Regional semi-finals of the NCAA Championship three times in the past six seasons.
