Richmond 69, Butler 68

TUCSON, Ariz.-Freshman Courtney Nelson scored on a lay-up with three seconds remaining to lift Richmond to a 69-68 victory over Butler in the first round of the Fiesta Bowl Classic at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz., on Tuesday. The victory boosted Richmond to 5-4 on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to the same mark. Nelson's game-winning play came moments after center Jamie Smalligan hit a pair of free throws to give Butler a 68-67 lead with 10 seconds remaining. The Richmond guard pushed the ball up floor, put a spin move on Butler's Bruce Horan at the three-point arc, drove past one Butler defender and hit a reverse lay-up. Horan managed a desperation attempt from three-quarter court, but it was well off the mark.
