INDIANAPOLIS - Soccer standout Boris Gatzky of Butler University and cross country runner Abbie Zaspel of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Month for August/September.

Gatzky (Reutlingen, Germany), a senior forward, helped Butler to a 6-1 start, including a 2-0 mark in the Horizon League. He concluded the first month of the season tied for third in the League with three goals and tied for fifth with seven points. In addition, he was selected the offensive MVP at the adidas Gamecock Classic after leading the Bulldogs to the tournament title with victories over 25th-ranked University of South Carolina and Presbyterian College.

In the classroom, Gatzky carries a 3.777 grade-point average as a marketing major at Butler and has been named to the Horizon League's Academic Honor Roll. He has been named to the Horizon League's All-Academic Team and Academic Honor Roll as well as the Butler Athletic Director's Honor Roll during his career.

Zaspel (Burlington, Wis.), a senior, was Milwaukee's top runner at each of the Panthers' three meets during September. She took second place at the UIC Home Opener Sept. 5, before winning the Huskie Invitational Sept. 12. Following the Huskie Invite, she was named the Horizon League Athlete of the Week. She closed out the month with a 14th-place showing at the Midwest Collegiate Open Sept. 19.

A nursing major, Zaspel owns a 3.888 grade-point average and has been named to the Academic All-Horizon League Team. She posted a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during the fall and spring semesters in 2008-09.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
