INDIANAPOLIS - Butler sophomore guard/forward Gordon Hayward has been named the Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 14. The weekly honor was Hayward's second of the season.
A native of Brownsburg, Ind., Hayward averaged 16.3 points and 11.7 rebounds per game to lead #18/15 Butler to three wins last week that extended the Bulldogs' winning streak to 15 in a row and clinched Butler's fourth consecutive regular-season League title. In back-to-back games, he had 22 points and a career-high 17 rebounds at Youngstown State on Thursday and 19 points and 11 boards at Cleveland State on Saturday. Hayward shot 53 percent (17-of-32) from the floor and was 12-of-13 from the free-throw line last week.
For the season, Hayward ranks fourth in the Horizon League with 16.0 points per game and third with 8.3 rebounds per contest. He is the only player to rank among the top five in both categories.
Butler (23-4, 16-0 Horizon League) has tied the school record for consecutive wins and now owns the nation's longest active winning streak heading into home games this week against UIC on Wednesday and Siena on Saturday in BracketBusters (ESPN2, 11 a.m. ET). The Bulldogs are only the second League team to start 16-0 in conference play, joining Green Bay, which was a perfect 16-0 in 1995-96.
