INDIANAPOLIS - Butler sophomore guard/forward Gordon Hayward has been named the Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 20. It is the second week in a row he has received the League's weekly honor.
A native of Brownsburg, Ind., Hayward had game-highs of 22 points and 14 rebounds and made the game-winning lay-up with 1.2 seconds left following a scrum as #21/17 Butler nipped Xavier 69-68 Saturday in a nationally televised game on ESPN2.
Hayward shot 6-of-11 from the floor, including 4-for-5 from three-point range, and was 6-of-7 at the free-throw line while posting his seventh career double-double. With Butler trailing by one, he forced a jump ball with 38 seconds remaining and later pulled down an offensive rebound before grabbing a loose ball and putting in the game-winner. His lay-up was the final play of the game as officials ruled the clock had inadvertently stopped earlier in Butler's possession and that time would have expired just as Hayward's shot went through the hoop.
Hayward ranks third in the Horizon League in scoring with 17.4 points per game and second with 8.7 rebounds per contest. He is the only player to rank among the top three in both categories.
Butler (8-3, 2-0 Horizon League) will play at UAB (10-1) Tuesday in the Bulldogs' final game before resuming League action Dec. 31 against Green Bay (10-3, 3-0).
