Butler's Hegeman, CSU's Lefeld Honored as U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler University men's soccer player Nick Hegeman and Cleveland State University volleyball player Kayla Lefeld have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 12, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Friday (Oct. 17).


Hegeman (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville), a junior goalkeeper, recorded his fifth shutout of the season in Butler's 1-0 upset of No. 4 University of Illinois at Chicago on Saturday. The shutout was the sixth of his career. He also had four saves in the Bulldogs' 2-0 loss to No. 23 Indiana on Oct. 7.


As an economics major, Hegeman carries a 3.376 grade-point average at Butler. He has been named the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll and the Butler Athletic Directors Honor Roll during his career.


Lefeld (St. Henry, Ohio/St. Henry), a junior outside hitter, averaged 4.31 points per set and had three double-doubles to help Cleveland State to a 2-1 record last week. In three matches, she totaled 40 kills, 39 digs, five aces and five assists.


In the classroom, Lefeld maintains a 3.78 grade-point average as a middle childhood education major at Cleveland State and has earned a CSU Scholar-Athlete Award for her efforts.


The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
