Butler's Howard, Loyola's Staton Honored as U.S. Army Scholar-Athletes of the Month for January

Howard (Connersville, Ind./Connersville), a sophomore, averaged 12.5 points and 6.6 rebounds and shot 62 percent from the field in eight consecutive wins for nationally-ranked Butler during January. He had high games of 18 points in a victory over Loyola and 11 rebounds twice. In addition, he led the League in field-goal shooting through the end of January and also ranked among the top 10 in scoring and rebounding.
In the classroom, Howard carries a 3.727 grade-point average as a finance major at Butler. He has been named Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week on three occasions this season.
Staton (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community), a senior, won the 800 meters (2:17.26) at the Carle Health Alliance Invite at the University of Illinois Jan. 24 and also set personal bests in the 800 (2:12.32) and mile (5.00.93) at the Indiana Relays Jan. 30-31. Her 800 time at the Indiana Relays is the second-best time in Loyola history.
A psychology major, Staton owns a 3.63 grade-point average at Loyola. She has earned the League's weekly scholar-athlete honor twice this season and also has received recognition on the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll during her career.
The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
